[IC] MisonoPad 30% keyboard - Top Mount Portable Keyboard
« on: Thu, 09 July 2020, 22:44:43 »
Please read the most recent replies! The design has changed greatly!

Hi, everyone! I recently pitched this idea on r/MechMarket, but I figured it would be wise to post it here, one of the larger dedicated spaces for keyboards. So, here's my love project: The MisonoPad! I recently finished my first rough prototype and am now collecting feedback from the community to hopefully improve upon the design I am making.

A summary of what this keyboard aims to do: I made this keyboard in hopes of making something satisfying to type on, satisfying to look at, but yet to be effective and portable. I write as a hobby, and as someone who is on the move a lot, I typically use my laptop keyboard. But as of late, it's just not quite cutting it for me anymore. So, rather than invest in something like a Planck, I put my mind to the test to make something that is small, is easy to use (as someone who has used staggered 60%s and TKLs), and retains a high level of usability for someone who types numerous words on the daily.

I designed this keyboard as both an enthusiast and an author. I was quite sick of typing on my laptop's scissor keys, so I decided to make something ultra-portable, yet with an air of familiarity and a minimalist flair to set itself apart from others. As I am someone who is constantly on the move, having a keyboard which is easy to just toss in my bag and go without much space concern was a big deal for me. When I checked all of the 40% keyboards, many were ortholinear, something which I didn't feel comfortable with learning (nor did I like it, the few times I had tried them.)

And, I came up with this!

Comparison to a GK61X

(Please note that this is a first iteration and only loosely reflects the final product.)

Here's a quick rundown of all of the features included (in this prototype)

- 33-35 key layout, dependent on bottom row

- Two dedicated layer keys, enabling 5 different layers without compromising other keys!

- Discrete 4-bit light bar on the side

- Fully programmable with QMK

- Split spacebar

- Top-mount plate design

- Standard staggered key layout!

And, here are some planned features for the final product!

- Media Knob w/ button

- USB-C support

- Integrated MCU as standard on most keyboard PCBs

- Restructuring the bottom row to include another switch and to use a more standard 2.75u and 2.25u spacebar

- ABS case rather than a 3D printed PLA case

- Backlighting!

For me, the goal was to minimize a keyboard to the smallest point possible, but without compromising on usability to a crazy extent like the pain27 does. And, through multiple design iterations (and copious amounts of prototyping time), I feel I am getting closer to my goal.

Currently, I do *not* have a target price, but for specifics, I will be aiming for either an aluminum or ABS case design. My prototype is done in 3D printed PLA plastic, which is not typically practical for the use case of this keyboard, as it deforms in heat. If I do have to fall back onto a 3D printer, I will likely print with polycarbonate, PETG, or ABS.

Here is the IC form. I will be periodically e-mailing updates about it if you sign on.

Yo does the LED on the side turn off?

Yep. Layer2 + Lctrl shuts them off

Nice effort :) It's ways great to see people build cheap full customs with 3D printing.

I would just say that the uneven blockers and gaps between spacebars don't look very good IMO. But I understand that's something you have to deal with when you start cutting keys... ;) That's where ortho has a big advantage of looking clean.

Ah, yeah, that's why I'm switching to a more standard bottom row. The gaps won't be present once I have the final PCB done.

If the goal is tiny/portable have you considered kailh choc switches?

Neat idea, looks a lot like QAZ which is running in GB today

That print is MINT! but I have to ask why the weird spacing on the bottom row, don't you think you could clean it up so its not so.... gapey?

Yeah, a standard bottom row is in the works. Won't have gaps in the final iteration.

Hi everyone! I'm back again for another update. I spent the majority of the week working on CAD, both on the electronics side of things and on the case. I have some stuff to show! I'll start by addressing the layout.

Here's what the layout is going to be (return and rshift are not permanent and will be subject to change). There are no more gaps on the bottom row as was shown in the prototype. I'm currently thinking of what to do with the middle 1.25u key on the bottom row. Suggestions are appreciated!

Otherwise, I spent most of the week working on the PCB. I have nailed mostly everything that was planned for it and I requested a quote for prototype production.
The MCU is now integrated and uses USB-C! I now have a footprint on it for an Alps EC11 series encoder,  which will hopefully come with an aluminum knob in the finished project. As you can see, there are also PCB mount stabilizers. The board overall is now slimmer, which will translate into the case being smaller than it was.
Unfortunately, I cannot be able to include individual key lighting. The keyboard's form factor is too small and I will have to compromise on space in order to include routing for that.

And here's the case! (The purple stem is the EC11 Rotary Encoder)

Featuring a top-mount plate-mount case and PCB! The USB-C cutout is exact with around a +-.3mm tolerance. I'm currently on the fence about recessing the front of the top plate like I did with the prototype, but once more, I'll leave that up to interest.

I've recieved mixed thoughts about my ribbon logo being present on the front of the board, so that is currently up in the air. The most major reason if it's (current) omission was to fit the rotary encoder. In case you all really like it, it may make a return somewhere else on the board!

It's been a while, but this keyboard has seen some HUGE updates to its overall design.

So, first off, I ditched the janky non-symmetrical layout. Here's the new one.

Much better.

Here's the PCB's corresponding update:

A whopping 19 LEDs on the top bar, and two encoders! I'll be producing free encoder well blockers if this thing ever makes it into GB stage, for people who don't want to use two or any encoders.

Here's the case's update:

Mid-profile case with frosted acrylic to diffuse the light off at the top.

This should hopefully be the final design. Just have to run the final set of prototype boards, print the prototype case, run the prototype case to a cnc facility, and then if it all works out smoothly then I can proceed into the GB phase.
Big shoutouts to the 40% Keyboards discord for helping me hash a lot of these design issues out. Couldn't have done this without them!

Love it, looks cute. Would you consider placing the USB port on either side so that it can be placed flush against a laptop?

Just need to order the prototype PCBs and order my prototype alu case, and this thing should be set, assuming it all goes smoothly.

The key config probably needs some work but in terms of physical layout it looks pretty damn neat for such a novelty-sized board. I could be tempted depending on pricing.

Key config is gonna be difficult for sure, the QMK code is going to be available for everyone since I believe everyone's gonna have their own wants and needs.

I really like it! Would totally join in a gb.
awesome to hear! it's gettin there :)
