PCB mounted switch and stabs
« on: Sat, 07 November 2020, 08:07:19 »
I've noticed a recent increase in PCB mounted switches and stabs  keyboards (just seeing updated releases like GMMK pro tend to align with these requests).

I've been using plate mount switch for years (even in hotswap boards) and I've never felt my switches were wobbly or weak on my keyboard. Isn't PBC mounted switches more prone to wobble since their stabilization is based on pins instead of the whole plate?

Isn't the same for stabs?

Some type of switches are made for PCB mount and it irritates people to clip the pins?

I might be missing something here but I'm having some difficulties figuring out why the demand goes toward PCB instead of plate.

Edit: a bit curious about GMMK pro claiming it accepts both 3 and 5 pins switches... how can that be possible actually?

PCB mount is for plate less builds or half plate, so the switches aren't crooked when you solder them in. It is not meant for wobble reduction.

I never had plate mount stabilizers since those sound bad at least the ones from OEM's so i always prefer PCB mount.

Thank you!

Unless I don't get it, hotswap PCB mount sounds like a terrible idea no?

Do you mean plateless hotswap? You will always want a strong plate for the hotswap because you cannot have the switches moving in and out of the hotswap socket.

5 pin switch in hotswap sockets are great with the addition of a plate

hotswap sockets don't allow for PCB mount no space.

Actually Kailh HS sockets are made to accept 5 pin switches if the PCB allows, both of my HS boards are using 5 pin switches right now without issue (A Noxary T60 running an Instant60 Tsangan PCB with 5 pin Gaterons & a Mahjong running Creams, the PCB for this board is proprietary). Also if a HS PCB allows for 5 pin switches you can run them plateless just fine, my T60 I mentioned above is running plateless & I have had no issues with the switches staying in place. It is a fairly flexy build  that way too.

Oh i didn't know that. I though hotswap blocked 5 pin switches.
