Closest RGB keyboard to Topre Realforce R2 PFU
« on: Thu, 28 January 2021, 14:59:04 »
Hi all,

I've got a Topre RealForce R2 PFU Limited Edition TKL at home and even though I love it, I need to replace it with an RGB one.
The obvious first choice would be the RealForce RGB, however I heard that keyboard is not really up to the Topre standard.

Could anyone recommend an RGB keyboard that would perhaps come close to the typing experience to the one I have? (if such thing even exists)

Thank you

The RGB is a fine keyboard, and some of us around here think it's great.  The only issues with it are that the upstroke clack is different than a normal Topre, due to different materials in the sliders, and the stabilizers are nosier than normal Topre ones.  If you're up for a little surgery, you can open it up, unscrew the PCB, install Deskeys silencing rings (they make a version just for the RGB), and put a glob of grease on the stabilizers where the wire goes into the stabilizer pegs, or whatever you want to call them.  Mine will make a little bit of a metallic tap if I hit a stabilized key on the edge, but in normal usage, it's very quiet.  I've bought two of them on eBay for $200 each.  Even factoring in the cost of the stabilizing rings and a new set of keycaps, they're the cheapest way to get a uniform 45g Topre keyboard, short of a Type Heaven, and the only way to get an RGB Topre.

You know what I am going to say. RGB is the very feature that you wish for. I have found only in my own experience. With about 7 of these boards. That the LED's Topre implemented do not offer great longevity. If you can solder, than no issue. I would upgrade all. Right off the bat. You will notice. Those are much older LED dies. Be careful how much power though. This is honestly YMMV. Maybe you have no problem at all.

Riverman is otherwise correct. With the minor upgrades it is pretty much a 108UB. I kind of like the case better on the non backlit but that is just shiny Vs. Matt. You get APC for only $263. That is a very good deal.
I would strongly consider upgrading the keycaps to the $20 Vortex set.
