Been lurking this hobby for about a year; finally talked my wife around on group buys in time for GMK Dots’ second run. Until they arrive, ample time to finally memorize which punctuation is on which number key, gradually poke at switch samples, and possibly learn to solder. Whatever board I put ’em on will be named after Mavis Beacon. Favorite layouts so far are 1800 and, since I rarely use numpad, honestly, ~65%.

I may have failed to register months ago due to answering “PS/2” to one of the spam questions (I think I expected it to be a trick question somehow).

Hi Xyzzyka. Welcome to Geekhack.

Those dot caps are pretty cool, though I'm not big on caps myself.

Keyboards are a fantastic way to learn soldering. The contacts are huge and really spaced out. Precision is almost irrelevant. You'll just need patience and careful practice so you don't lift any pads or anything. I can't use anything smaller than 60% with dedicated arrow keys myself. 1800 definitely has its benefits for people who use numpads.

Was PS/2 the wrong answer?

What switches have you tried? Which do you like?
