Greetings!
« on: Wed, 10 March 2021, 12:35:15 »
Greetings, my fair Geekhackians! I am Me, a kid who has no money to his name but dreams of having a mechanical keyboard. Well, I used to be until my parents recently decided to let me get one, with one condition. I had to build it myself. This wasn't really a problem for me, as I love compact layouts but need FN keys and maybe the Arrow keys. What does that smell like to you? It certainly suggests 75% to me! Now, there weren't many prebuilt 75% keyboards, and none under the budget that I needed, so I had to scour the internet for parts in order to come out with a total cost of 156$, with the soldering iron and solder(I hadn't previously owned one), and the plan to build my own case, or at least 3d print one. I had a few problems, and they need to be sorted out soon, as I was going to get the keyboard soon and some of my parts had deals that are expiring as I type. Thus, Geekhack. I created an account today here, and on Deskthority. I was going to do it on R/MK too, but I was on my school chromebook and Reddit is blocked there. I have done a ton of research and only need a few questions answered, and then I will be on my way to becoming a true keyboard enthusiast. I will leave a link to a thread with some of my questions on it, and also, if you were wondering, my username was created by randomly typing 2 letters, and when it came out as an understandable word, I kept it! Thanks, and I hope to be a part of the community! :thumb:

I just realized I put that one in the wrong genre. Here is a link to a new one:

Hi Me, welcome to Geekhack.

I know, I'm really late, and I think we've both already commented in the same threads. 75% is one of the smallest layouts I find usable myself, I could never do that 40% stuff, and 60% needs arrow keys.

What switches have you tried? You don't want to go through all of that work, especially now that you say that you're handwiring, without knowing you've got a switch you're going to want to actually type on 6 months from now. It is usually a good idea to have a pretty expansive switch tester to play with to start forming a specific taste in switches.

well, i bought some kailh box pale blues, and just got them a few days ago, and honestly, I think their great, but I don't know how they'll be in a board. Also, I'm doing something in my kb where I mix up the switches based on the keys, like linears for the wasd, arrow, and bkspace keys, tactile for the mods, and clicky for the rest. Also, I have created my own custom layout because I had that freedom(handwiring), so I'll link it i guess(btw blue keys are clicky, red are linear, and brown are tactile for the colors of the keys). For the linears im going with creams, and for the tactiles I am taking advice from @Leslie and going with kailh purple pros, then replacing the springs and lubing them. She said that you would get 95% of a hi end switch's feel just by doing that.

Oh, and a lot has changed since that post, and I am no longer going with backlighting so you can ignore those links.

Right, I didn't realize that thread on those mixed switches was started by you. That's an interesting layout to be sure. You'll have to let us know how you like it once you have some time on it.

Pale blues are certainly a fantastic choice for clickies. I would take it over literally everything else still in mass production besides box jades, pinks or navies, or Matias' clicky switches.

Yep, I'll def let you guys know. I think that with the help of layers, it will basically be just as useful(# of keys wise) as a standard 100% kb, although I don't know about ergonomics. It does have split bars, but idk. Yeah, the reason I chose pale blues was because I listened to some sound tests and in them they sounded awesome, so I decided to try them.
