Please talk me out of doing PE foam mod
« on: Thu, 19 August 2021, 14:26:42 »
So, lately my Youtube recommendations have been inundated with PE foam mod typing tests, and I'm getting upset by wanting to do it to my own board. I have a custom fullsize already with all the mods I could think of just a few months ago, and I already really like how it sounds. I really can't be assed to tear it apart just to put foam in there but I want to so badly if it would add to the sound the way it does to other boards.

The biggest question I have is whether it relies more on having a stiff plate, or flexible one. I think a lot of times the sound tests are with boards that have polycarb/FR4/flex cut aluminum plates, the plate in my board is brass so if a stiff plate is bad then I really won't bother. I'm also just not great at desoldering and worried I would mess up the PCB or something in the process and really don't want to do that, but this has me considering getting a desoldering station to do it.

I also know about the tape mod, that would be easy enough to try in the mean time but I know the sound signatures are different and unfortunately PE foam really seems like what I'm after.

Here is how the board sounds already for reference:

Try it out and see if you like how it changes the sound. There's no other way of knowing if you'll like it in your board.

I mean if you are happy with the way the board sounds as is (BTW it does sound nice in that video!), why bother with desoldering a full size just for a marginal improvement at best? I would say to try it out on some of your newer builds or a hotswap build if you have one just to see if you like the mod IRL at least, before going at your Southpaw with a desoldering equipment. As far as the plate thing goes I couldn't say as I have yet to try the PE foam mod myself yet, but from what it sounds like the PE foam is somehow filtering out the higher & even some of the mid pitches while reflecting the deeper pitches back up at you. So it might actually have better results with metal plates that tend to have higher pitched sounds vs plastics & composites.
