USB accessory has too much power when connecting PCB?
« on: Wed, 07 July 2021, 23:58:30 »
So I'm building a Discipline 65 (bought from mechboards.co.uk) and I've finished soldering all the components and when I tried plugging in into my Mac, it gives me a warning that says, "unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices". Has anyone else gotten this message? Maybe I'm missing a step? I've followed the steps to the T and made sure all the components were oriented the correct way. Would love any help at all. Thanks!

Not familiar with this board but here are some generic causes of that message.

Are you using a USB port on the motherbord or the front of the case?  There's more power at the back so try that if you're using one on the case.

Another option would be a short on the USB lines, this can happen on factory soldered controller chips or at the socket if you soldered it manually.

Are you using a purchased custom cable or maybe you made your cable yourself? I'm asking this because I recently dived into building custom coiled cables and I also experienced this issue.

I later found out that it was a bad soldering job made by me on one or both of the connectors that was causing the issue. I removed redone the soldering on both ends and it works from there.

Note that when you see this error (USB accessory has too much power), MacOS disables the port in the Mac. So when doing a fix, you need to use a different USB-C socket in your Mac, there should be more than 1. It sometimes needs a restart for the OS to reenable the socket/port again.

i remember someone a bit back having the same problem because the LEDs drew too much power from the mac, can't really say much about it given that i do not have lighting on my boards and my mac is a mini G3 so likely inapplicable to you :)

Thanks both of you, it turned out to be a tiny short in the UBS-C that I had made when I had soldering it onto the PCB. Thanks again!

Woah that's pretty insane! I actually use a USB-C to USB-A cable. I also have a mac mini but its G4. Turned out to a short on the USB-C port that I had soldered to the PCB. Thanks for the input. #MacMiniArmy
