HTPC keyboards?
« on: Mon, 06 September 2010, 09:16:09 »
Hey guys,

I'm building a HTPC this month that'll be running Linux, and was wondering if you guys had any solutions for a keyboard.  It'll mostly be used for movie watching/streaming etc, but I'll also program on it some so a fullsize keyboard would be good (I think).  Basically looking for wireless, decent keys, no keypad, some sort of track ball or trackpad.

Any suggestions from you guys?

P.S.: still loving my G80-8113 :D

Well for HTPC I would recommended wireless and tenkeyless with a touch pad.

I concur with the dinovo mini.

If you're looking for something closer to a real keyboard I would say get the dinovo edge. I have one and I can confidently say that it's a great keyboard. If you're an aesthetically inclined person; the edge on it's charging cradle looks like a piece of art.

I use a Microsoft Natural Wireless keyboard, without the mouse. My HTPC is just an old laptop on a docking station, running XMBC. A mouse is completely unnecessary, since there are extensive hotkeys for every function on the program (for example, alt+RightArrow jumps ahead 10sec, alt+shift+RightArrow jumps forward 1min). I feel like any wireless keyboard would work fine. It's not as though you're doing heavy typing. Depends on how much money you want to spend.

diNovo Edge bad side:
 a) poor tactility (but I have over year on it as main keyboard, so it's not end of the world)
 b) the aluminum part may be sometimes too cold
 c) collects dust :)

The good things include:
 a) good layout
 b) good battery life
 c) good RF range (at least in my case)
 d) nice touchpad with scroll

May do a perfect HTPC choice for the OP.

Not wireless. Newer ones have some controller issues. Something to do with not releasing shift quickly enough.
