Stabilizer doesn't return to original state
« on: Sat, 20 August 2022, 13:22:22 »
Hey guys! I'm relatively new to the hobby and wanted to replace my current stabilizers with some Durock plate-mount stabs, since that's all my keyboard supports. However, after I received them and tried them on my spacebar, with no mods yet, the spacebar get stuck at the bottom and I have to brute force it back up. It works perfectly fine on my old stabs and my spacebar is level, so I'm at a loss. I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to fix it. Same thing happens with other modifiers. Any tips on how I can fix this? Thanks in advance!

The stabs seem to work as they should without a keycap: if one side goes up, so does the other. I've reassembled them many times, but still they don't work. I tried the holee mod, as I did with my previous stabs, but the stabs feel worse and get stuck in the middle, probably due to tighter tolerances on the two holed side. I've held back on lubing them, in case I have to send them back.

I've had a problem with the same symptoms using aftermarket plate-mount stabilisers. It turned out the stabs did not sit perfectly straight at the correct distance from one-another.
I managed to wiggle them into the correct positions to make them work ... for now. If they hadn't I would probably have tried widening the holes in the plate using needle files.

Actually, the stabs were fitting reeeally tightly, so maybe I'll try filing the plate a bit, thanks!

As an update: I filed down all the places where the stabilizers go, and they are generally working better! However, they are quite mushy and a bit sluggish at times. Also, for two of the modifier keys(spacebar and backspace), I had to use my old Gateron browns in order to make them work correctly. On the rest of my board, I'm using the tactile Akko Lavender Purples. On the two modifiers however, the key would come up all the way up to the bottom of the tactile bump, and wouldn't be able to go past that. Thus, sometimes it would register the key as being pressed continuously. Any thoughts on what the issue could be?

It sounds like you might have over-lubed your stabs (assuming you lubed them).  It can get real mushy and "stick" in that situation.  You can cut through some of the lube with isopropyl alcohol if this is the case.  I notice that Durocks really don't need a lot of lube.

Anyway, I had a similar situation on a brand new GMMK Pro (over-lubed from the factory).  I used a q-tip with IPA on it and that helped, but I ultimately ended up replacing the default stabs with Durock V2s.

Unfortunately, this was the case before I put lube on the stabs. In fact, I washed the stabs just to be sure there wasn't any random oil on them. I have lube on them now and they at least return, which is better than before, but the mushy feeling is the same and they still sometimes work sluggishly.
