I got a big deck! :D
« on: Wed, 29 September 2010, 13:48:54 »
Yay, it was in the mail today, just typing on my first mech over here and yes I am very ****ing pleased people :D

Love the look, definitely love the feel! Would prefer to have that original TG3 font though, I am currently typing on the red version of the Deck 82.

Anywho, now to the downsides (yes there are several even though I just unboxed the *****):

- First of all they messed up my order, instead of a Legend Toxic, they send me an 82 toxic. Friggin idiots.... But I guess I should have checked the order confirmation again (although I have the email with the order saved and it clearly says send me a LEGEND... whatever)

- Second of all, there is no friggin extra keycaps with the board. At least not the German one. The 2 US ones they send me have both 1 additional keycap, the one with the skull. Doesn´t Déck ship with like 6 additional keys or something? I remember to have seen a bunch of em in the reviews I read online...

- Then we get to the key rollover. Are those Deck dudes high on ****ing crack? I get the full 6 key rollover just about anywhere on the board BUT the ESDF and WASD cluster. Why? Why would someone mess up exactly that one area ?!?!?

Examples:

ASDFGH - pass
WERTZU - pass
just about any combination NOT involving more than 2 keys from the QWAS cluster works. Why would anyone in their right mind make a gaming keyboard of all kinds that misses exactly that cluster ???
QSDFGH - pass

QWE - fail as we all know#
QAS - fail
WAS - fail
ESD - FAIL
EDR - FAIL

Maybe one more systematic:
If I press WEDF (which works), I can NOT press any of the following (stops at WEDF): QASYXCVRT
ZGB and onwards work again.

Remember this is a german keyboard layout. If you are getting confused, remember to switch Z and Y when u try what I was doing ;)

So basically, the entire left side of the board is messed up...

Going to play a round of Bad Company 2 and Starcraft 2 now and see how mich if at all it bothers me.

Will report back tomorrow or later tonight (german time) with info on the blue Deck 82 and if they fixed the rollover on it (my guess is it is old stock and will have the same issues but let`s see :)

Either way: Mechanical keyboards ftw !

I mean I love typing texts that are way too long anyway but god dammn this is fun :D

Also: The Deck is hella sexy. Can´t say **** about that ^^

Later folks

I gotta say it, I gotta eat my words, the blue deck is indeed proper 6key rollover, even if ordered from activekey...

It´s even sexier then the red one with German layout too, really dig this TG3 font! Plus the blue light is awesome too.
Damn this is a tough decision. Let´s see how the blue cherry mx DAS fares... It should arrive tomorrow.

Shame I can´t test the Legend. Will probably have to re-order it from ActiveKey as I would definitely consider going legend now that I am seriously considering US layout ...

/Edit

The Toxic they sent me by accident also has full 6key rollover unlike the one from ricercar ...

So apparently ActiveKey does not carry a bunch of old ass stuff :)

My sincere appologies!

However, the red 82 is a disaster... Shame I can´t have my 82 Deck in GER layout after all...

Oh by the way, forgot to mention it.

The test used was the one from the n-key rollover wiki, the one a forum member programmed, forgot who. http://random.xem.us/rollover.html

feel like getting rid of ur 82 ice? :) I might be a taker if the price is right ha.

I could offer a brand new DAS Model S Ultimate (blank keycaps) with blue switches in return. EU layout so it has that additional key.
Have to test it first though, maybe I will prefer it over the Deck, then the deal would be off *g* but so far I am very pleased with the black switches. May be cuzz this is my first mech ever though.

Yeah the ghosting is unbearable .... I tried a round of Bad Company 2 and it was killing me, literally ... ^^

I dont like finish of DAS Keyboard ^^.
btw i own the Deck 82 with US Layout, on the German Version of the Deck was a small ugly font and non Windows key :P.

The MX Blacks fine for FPS games, but for RTS games like Starcraft 2 blacks suck personally.

Did u have a blue with GER layout??
Man I would kill for that one :D

The GER layout one I have atm is red with the rollover issues.

I just tired it in 1 round of starcraft as well. Other than the layout being different (the number keys are a bit off), I didn't mind at all.

Still, let's see how the DAS compares :)

The finish I also don't prefer but heard it was less attractive to finger prints than for example the Sidewinder X4 which I also have. Will compare as well.

I bought a couple of the 82 key models directly from Deck over a year ago and the only extra keycap either of them came with was the skull.

Deck used to sell extra sets of replacement keycaps with different designs on them (I think they had them for Windows, Mac and Linux) but they stopped a while ago.

I'm not sure I'm following all this.

So you're saying the currently shipping blue Ice 82 key Deck and green Toxic 82 key is NKRO?   The red  Fire 82 Deck was not?   If so please confirm and I'll stick it in the wiki.

Would prefer to have that original TG3 font though

Would you trade your Deck-Font 82-key set, plus a blank Deck set of 82 (from performance PCs, for example) for an TG3-font 82-key set?

Would you trade a Deck 82-key blue LED keyboard for my TG3 82-key red LED keyboard?

I was asking the OP.  These are newly shipping Deck 82s so I'm just trying to confirm because it's a little confusing.  If they ARE NKRO I'll say so in the Wiki.

The 82 Ice and Toxic ARE both 6KRO, that's correct. I believe the original production of the entire 82 line was tainted and had rollover issues. Then they fixed it for the Ice and Toxic but not for Gold and Fire which were discontinued immediately. Since then the Toxic has been discontinued as well. So now the ICE is the only one available and it has 6KRO. New batch Toxics however have, too. Might be a good idea to find a way to determine the Production number or sth to know if it is an old or new batch Toxic...
All Gold and Fire seem to be from the "first batch" and seem to have those rollover issues and are only available used or from ActiveKey in Germany (only few left). The rollover issues are extreme by the way, as I raged in my first post (cuzz I still can't believe it), the entire left side of the boards are plagued with issues and pressing pretty much any 2 key combination left of Z(Y),G,B will result in 2KRO. If u plan to do any kind of gaming with those keyboards, DON'T BUY THEM. This is insanely inadequate for a gaming keyboard...

Toxic and Blue at ActiveKey both seem to be from the new, fixed batch and have 6KRO I can confirm. The Toxic that ricercar got off of ebay was thus likely from the old batch, I can only assume ... Adam at the Deck forum was also quite surprised when ricercar posted and mentioned that his Toxic has 2KRO. He said that Toxic he got must be way old. I guess he was right? Sry ricer :( I almost bid on that one myself actually...

Oh and to make things clear for the wiki:
The Fire 82 I got was GER layout, I can not confirm myself for the US layout of Gold and Fire that they don't have 6KRO. But it would be very surprising if they do as they weren't produced in the new, fixed batch according to the Deck-Forum.

@ricer and rest about the Font

ok, my bad. I was quite excited and threw together some wrong facts *g*
The Font I like so much is actually the Deck font, somehow yesterday I thought they got that from TG3 which is quite insane considering TG3 makes stuff for hospitals and such. Imagine them typing on lord of the rings font *g*. The Font on the GER layout 82 Deck is actually the TG3 font.

I think I wouldn't trade solely based on the fact that I am in Europe and you are not, I assume? Shipping would just be a pain don't u agree? Otherwise I would listen, depending on how old, where from, pics, etc. . But probably not because I don't really like to trade new tech for used...

That commercial was awesome. I wonder why they can't get girls like 2 and 7 as babes for Razer. Their chicks were 20s compared to 2 and 7...
Oh and I am typing on my new DAS Model S Ultimate. Those blue switches are extreeeeemely clicky and noisy! But I don't mind it at all. And the feel is grrrreat too. Not nearly as sexy as the Dêck though... And I think I prefer the blacks. They just feel so much harder than the blues.

Either way, I have to say I can't believe I was typing on thos ****ing ****ty Logitechs my entire life!
I actually find myself disregarding any auto complete and typing the entire word myself, just cuzz it's so much fun!

Complete Review will follow shortly. Now I am really craving something with brown switches, as the difference between blue and black is just huge!

I am currently seriously deliberating what I prefer lol

I have found that I am fine with the blues for gaming too.
I have also found that the blues are faaaaar better for typing but the noise is obscene :)

I have also found that the Deck is one of the sexiest boards I have ever seen and that I want to make love to it all night. Yet I am loosing at Starcraft with it all the time and it is not that great for typing after all...

As it is, I am thinking about sending beck all the Decks, keep the DAS (it was 66 Euro Bucks after all...) and order a Filco from UK with brown cherries. That one might just be my revelation :)

On the other hand, again, I do love that sexy ass deck ... Maybe I should consider ordering a Legend from the US with cherry clears (they are a bit more on the black than the blue side of things but still basically browns, correct?)

Man oh man, I need HELP :D

Can't have them all, can I?

Money money money mooooooneyyyyy :)

I have the Deck 82 at work with me right now. The more I type on it, the more I dislike it for typing pruposes... I mean I already have to get used to the US/ANSI layout, getting used to a compact board at the same time might not have been my best idea yet ...

I think I will send them all back and keep the Das for now.

Probably going to order a Filco from the UK with browns and GER layout and call it a day :) Although I am still considering ordering a Legend with clears...

I MIGHT still get a x-armor U9BL but at the moment I really want a board with brown switches, as I prefer blues towards blacks by far, this much is clear to me now. Browns could be "it" though, Clears might be even better, who knows.

Now I gotta hope my friend's parents from the U.S. are coming to visit him sometime soon, as I am willing to pay 180 bucks for the legend, might even be willing to pay the shipping costs of 42 $, but won't pay the god damn import duty and additional taxes, no, way :D

So probably I order the Filco now, keep the Das at work and wait for los Americanos to return here, then I get my legend (hope they still exist then, can't help but feel like I am racing against time when it comes to Deck...)

Maybe you don't like the Deck because the key profile is the same from row to row?  That's pretty unusual for mechanical keyboards.

I am actally beginning to think that the compact layout might be the bigger issue. I think I may be well open towards typing on blacks and still do really like the Deck. But getting used to US layout AND compact layout while also coming from rubber domes all my live and getting used to mechs is maybe just too much at once.

The blues feel comfortable instantly. On the one hand because you instantly feel the quality difference of mechs and the joy of typing, on the otherhand they aren't worlds apart from the rubber domes, so it does not take that huge amount of getting used to.

I think this is also what Razer and iOne are thinking and why they started their product lines with blue switch based boards. They may not be the best for gaming but they are fine for it and they may well be the best switches to "educate the masses" :)

Filcos in a GER layout sounds good though.  For gaming in the dark get one of these.

Total whimsy. Today on machine 1, I used a Cherry brown and later swapped in a hhkb for testing somethingl. On machine 2 I used a Cherry blue and was about to replace it with a Cherry black for gaming when I decide to test an iRocks glowy rubber dome keyboard. The while typing to an IM friend I did put the cherry black on machine 2. When I game in the dark tomorrow morning, I'll re-install the backlit cherry blue.

Maybe an hour. Since I've used each of my keyboards continuously for a week or so when first owned, it's not too hard to re-accustom my fingers to them.

Do you adapt to change faster over time?

*shrug* Probably. I'm more familiar with each keyboard the longer I use it.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.
