[IC] SeamLess 60% - a solid brass keyboard
« on: Tue, 11 April 2023, 07:40:26 »
SeamLess 60%
a solid brass 60% keyboard... without the seam  :D

Discord - Instagram - InterestCheck - Solid-Brass.it - Twitch

Shortly: gasket mount, 302x106, 17mm front, 33mm back, 7°

Something about me:

My name is Corrado and i'm from Italy.
I'm a naval and mechanical engineer.
I currently work as product engineer and i'm in the hobby since few years.

During the first Corona lockdown, i started gaming. I bought a cheap mechanical keyboard from aliexpress... that's how it started :)
Then i designed my first 2 keyboards. SeamLess is the son of my first-born. His name is SolidBrass 60%.
In the past 2 years i learned so much that i decided to open a new [IC] since the design of the first-born has been heavily modified.

The first sample of SolidBrass 60% has been shipped to WildCat. He liked the quality but however he founded a problem.
Using pbs screwed stabs, there was an interference between the screew and the bottom of the keyboard.
This forced me to correct my mistake and order new samples...
That's why i decided to change the design and remove the seam. It was visible on the side even if the two pieces were perfectely aligned.

From my mistake, SeamLess has born

Layout and PCB:

The keyboard has been designed aroud the Wilba Graphite 60%.
A custom PCB give you the possibility to further personalize your design. But force customers to buy extra pcb to avoid problems in the future.
A custom PCB may generate issues that i'm not able to solve (i've no experience with pcb and electrical circuits). Especially now, with components shortage, this can cause huge delay.
That's why i've preferred a standard one.

The plate allow all the layouts of the Graphite; ISO ANSI 6.25u and 7u spacebar.
The plate is brass made. But i will share all the necessary files to produce by other materials.

Material and colors:

When you use quality materials, there is no reason to cover and hide them.
The only aviable color will be the natural brass color.
Brass will be softly sandblasted to give to the kayboard a "soft touch" feeling.
A thin layer of transparent protector will be applied to protect the keyboard from oxidation.

Quantity and target price:

I don't have a MQO. Keyboards will be numbered from 0 to 99.
nr. 0 will be used as samples for photos and test. it will be sent to a content creator (WildCat).
nr. 1 to 99 will be sold through a GB.

Target price is 500€ (unless new important increase of the raw brass price).

EVA handbag, extra screews, are included.
A brass cap will be included  :thumb:

More Photos:

What's now?
This sunday (16th of April) at 20:00 (italian time) i'll be live on twitch to bild the first SeamLess keyboard
https://www.twitch.tv/ranger_trivette
20:00 italian time means:
2:00PM in New York or 11:00AM in Los Angeles
;D
Then i'll updates few photos her an on the discord channel.

Then the samples will be sent to WildCat for the final video and approval :)

I see you changed how the numbering is done on the proto, I really like it, will the numbering style on the wkl be changed as well?

I'm glad you like it  ;D i've just updated the images. now the positioning should be more clear!

i changed two of them (i've never liked the positioning of the WKL).
the only one i like was the hhkb, that's why i've kept it.

I love this, and may even have to pull the trigger even though 60% is too small for me.

really cool, actually decent price for the amount of brass used, however I feel like it may attract more attention if the top and bottom engravings were tweaked / removed? just my opinion, GLWIC!

The numbering being on the top is very polarizing.  I feel like putting it on the bottom is a much safer bet.

hi guys  :D
moving the numbering/logo it's an easy modify  :thumb:

let's wait for the opinion of Wildcat about how the tiping feels.
the most important thing is that the keyboard has no problem during the assebly.
once we know it works we can speak about cosmetical/aesthetics modification :)

Having owned a solid brass 60% before I would totally recommend it to others and would definitely like to own one again. However I feel like I speak for the majority of people when I say these engravings ruin the smooth aesthetic of the board you've tried to achieve by going seamless. I would ditch or modify the bottom engraving. We can tell it is solid brass just by looking at it. We don't need the bottom of the keyboard to reassure us. While we're at it I'd like to see the numbered engraving move to the bottom of the board to clean up the front end. If you absolutely MUST keep the engraving on the top housing of the board than I'd ditch the "Seamless" and just keep the "x of 99"

This ^

But I'd like the HHKB version and just the "x of 99" in the lower right, but I have some comments on that;
- Make the text slightly smaller
- Perhaps align it with the bottom row? It's centered in the blocker-area now and I'm not sure which I would prefer
- Maybe change it from "x of 99" to "#x" or "x/99"?
