Where to buy the Cherry G80-3000 in US?
« on: Mon, 18 October 2010, 16:33:56 »
I had tried more than ten resellers that I can search in the internet, but all of them are out of stock. I called some of the reseller, and they said the Cherry company requires them to order about 40~45 pc's, and they can not afford this amount, so the resellers don't want to go back instock of G80-3000.

Does there anyone know that where I can get a G80-3000 in US? Thanks!!

You can find them on ebay.

Shipping is a tad expensive though as it ships from Hong Kong.

Edit: does anyone know if the G80-3000 has NKRO?

There are none.

It's a little surprised to know that there is no G80-3000 in US stores:shocked:.

The shipping is $95, which is definitely out of my decision. I was going to get a G80-3000 around $60-80, but now it seems impossible, too sad.

Now I am going to find a replaced one with budget around $50-70 including shipping. It seems that I don't have too many choices in this price range. The Adesso MKB-125B looks not bad other than the compact design, so I am considering Adesso MKB-135B (although the price is a bit over my budget...).

Please give me some suggestions as I am extremely new in this area.

May i ask why you specifically want the Cherry G80-3000 ?

Yes that was what i was considering at first, however there are many variants of it so it's easily confusing which to get. Also not easy to find :/

Theres a newer Cherry G80-3494 LYCUS-2 that has POM laser etched keys, and uses Cherry MX red switches. However the only way to get them is through Tabao China :X For me after reading the reviews, red switches sounded too soft and easy to make accidental key presses when resting fingers lightly on keys, so i decided against getting one.

Then i looked at the Filco Majestouch Tactile which uses Cherry Mx Brown switches. It's good but i didn't particularly like the pad printed keys. They may be selling a full set of double shot replacements in the future for 40-60 usd, but when that will be is anybodys guess.

And finally i settled on the Ducky 9008 which is basically a better build of the Filco, and uses it's own controller to avoid any problems associated with some costar controllers. I was told it was laser etched keys however now it seems that they may be silk screen pad printed keys ..... Ducky also say they are selling full set pbt key cap replacements but their out of stock. And whether they are laser etched is anyones guess although i suspect they may be. According to another poster, gaga, he says Ducky did sell pbt keys before but they were too stiff and were spoiling the switches. So not sure if they will sell fixed versions or the old problematic ones :/

Anyway the Cherry, Filco and Ducky recommendations i posted above all support NKRO even when using a USB to PS2 adapter :X

Looking at your budget .... the recommendations i gave are probably out of your reach :/ since their roughly like 120-160 USD

Maybe you should consider something like a Rosewill perhaps ?

Black, white or blue swiches?

American ANSI layout (horizontal enter) with € on 5
80-3000LPC Black switches
80-3000LQC Clear (White) switches
80-3000LSC Blue switches

Keyboard: ~€55 (~$75) + shipping from germany: ~€42 (~$58) + custom fees, which I don't know what they are when importing from EU to US.

Still not cheap.. but cheaper then buying from Asia.

twn2, despite the obvious layout differences, the 125B and 135B have different feature sets. Do you play FPS games? Do you type a lot? You should consider what you use your keyboard for before making a decision. If you play fps games then you wouldn't want the 125B because it only has 2 key rollover. The 135B has n-key rollover.

Datacal.com used to carry a brown Cherry G80-3000 as regular stock, but I think they sold out.  The ones you could find in the US were not NKRO, but there are variants, primarily sold in Asia, that are.

Some folks prefer PCB-mounted (lower noise and slightly different feel). I've yet to see anything about the key rollover though. If it's 2kro, I wouldn't buy it.

Here is a review by some chinese guy. Use the google transalations to understand it roughly.
http://diy.yesky.com/input/327/11299827.shtml

Well things it has that the Filco doesnt

1. mini usb replaceable cable in case you thug off the keyboard wire and need it replaced.
2. Price. It's cheaper than the Filco even with shipping cost included, and if you order from bulk now you also get a free full set of keys + free WASD white keys + key cap puller
3. It uses a different controller common to Costar keyboards, to avoid some issues with costar controllers. I am not sure if they rectified them in Costar kbs, however Ducky is using their own to avoid that problem.

The Costar controllers are fine other than some of the Zero/M1 (ALPS) models sold in the US and the old Das III, and they weren't exactly "bad" (well maybe the DAS, but they were trying to do something weird with that one).  I don't know where all this FUD is coming from.

Thanks, Moogle, this is just options/price. Not the "better build" I was asking about . ;-) And yes, I seriously doubt it.

I don't see any controller problems with my Filco yet. Tried both PS/2 and USB.

IIRC WhiteRice got a (some?) Ducky recently. He might want to chime in and share his opinion.

Well maybe the info i read was out dated.

Costar was mentioned, but haven't heard about this issue on Filco in particular. But i did hear Das was affected :/ not sure what model.

So anyway are you saying the costar controllers have been fixed in the newer keyboards ?

Anyway once i get my ducky, how do i test whether the controller works ? Is there some special program to use.

As soon as I read Moogle's comment about build quality I thought, "uh oh."

*I can only comment on the ducky as I don't own a filco(yet.)*

I'm very pleased with it. In the case of the 1087; it's more than just a clone. While the appearances are similar, don't let that fool you they differ in some key ways.*

The case is built differently. The bottom part of the housing makes up the majority of the case, and the top is an inlay that's fills in the gaps between the keys.*

Aluminum plate makes the keyboard lighter.*

Detachable cord

LEDs are under the keys instead of the board.*

Tenkey layer, like your laptop or Model M space saver.*

Winkey lock.

Ripster pointed out it has a different PCB than the filco.*

Lavender WASD keys do not have pad printed arrows on the sides.*

Similarities:

Ripster also mentioned that the keys are similar if not the same as a filco.*

NKRO when using PS/2

Cherry Switches

My next purchase will probably be a white filco tenkeyless w/ browns for work. If that ever happens I'll be happy to do a direct comparison of both.*

Why don't you do a review?

This thread will disappear in a month.
Because that would make too much sense rip!

I wasn't going to because, when I first got it I thought it was a filco clone, but now after listing everything out it seems more worthy. Between the picture thread and this I just have to copy, and do some analysis.

Why I consider G80-3000 first is that I had used them before (with black and blue MX switches) and they were not bad to me. I don't have many experiences in using many different brands of keyboards, so I tend to consider a familiar one first.

By the way, I lived in Taiwan a few years ago, and I know that Cherry, Filco, and Ducky are all very famous in Taiwan. The G80-3000 was about $90 in Taiwan, but my friend told me that now the price is going to $120.

I had typed all Black, white and blue switches, and I like them all. So which of these switches are fine to me. But more than $120 on a G80-3000 might be too high for me, so I will hesitate on this. Although I like this model, if there are only expensive ones, I might want to try other brands.

Eventually, I order one G80-3000LPCEU-0 through the company which cooperate with my school. The price is $78.53+tax with shipping, which takes me $83.44. It's not that damn expensive like those shipping from Asia or Europe, but a little more than my expect. They also need 2-3 weeks to get this and ship to me, but I think this waiting time is tolerable to me. Anyway, this is the only place that I can get this, so no more choice for me. So sad that almost all US sellers don't sell this keyboard anymore...
