KBM Pizza Rat

Inspiration

I was inspired by the nostalgia of pizza in the late 80's and 90's and wanted to try my hand at creating a fun keycap set! Getting a personal pan pizza for completing your summer reading list or going to Chuck E. Cheese for someone's birthday and getting a slice of pepperoni pizza brings back a lot of memories for me. Also, can we acknowledge just how delicious looking the pizza was in The Goofy Movie, All Dogs Go to Heaven or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! My novelty designs are centered around that perfect, cheesy, but not very realistic image of pizza.

Kits:

- Base Kit: Large Pepperoni Pizza

- Numpad: Detroit Style

- Novelties: Toppings

Three of each topping per row so that you can cover a whole board with
a single topping if you wanted to.

- 40's / Ortho: Pizzetta

- Spacebars: Breadsticks

Verifying if they have 6u and 1.5u spacebars.

- POS: Point-of-Sale

This kit adds text novelties to the F-row as well as adds top crust support for 60% keyboards.
Also pays homage to the viral internet meme None Pizza, Left Beef

- Alpha Replacements: Extra Cheese

These keys replace the pepperoni keys in the base kit to allow for more pepperoni flexiiblity.
There is a good possibility that these will be moved into the base kit.

Crust: Pantone 1375 U
Cheese: Pantone 9160 C
Pepperoni: Pantone 2035 U
Red Onion: Pantone 2665 C
Green Bell Pepper: Pantone 354 C
Mushroom: Pantone 4655 C
Pineapple: Pantone 116 C

The legend color of the alphas is the Crust orange of the modifier keys and the
legend color of all the novelties and modifier keys is the Cheese color.

Purpose Statement

Because this is a very culturally important and signficant keycap set /s I spent many hours researching this culinary masterpiece. Color matching was especially important in my mind. Nobody wants a pizza set that doesn't look like pizza. I decided to use science...

Research Equipment

My research equipment. Test subjects were acquired via Pizza Hut.

So I picked up a Pantone Color Match Card (this was in like 2020 so this was before Pantone paywalled their colors, rude) but I didn't want to get pizza grease and sauce on the card so I lined the back of it with a sheet of parchment paper and cut a whole through the center.

Test Subjects

I chose two test subjects: #1) a combination pizza with Stuffed Crust® and #2) a three-topping pizza with sausage, pineapple, and olives. The toppings were selected based on what I felt would make good novelties as well as what I enjoy eating (pstttt... the answer is everything lol)

Harvesting the Samples

I dissected my test subjects and removed the best samples I could find on the pizza using my research equipment and attempted to take measurements of the colors using the Pantone Color Match Card.

Test Results

From my notes I recorded that it was too difficult to get a reading off of the pepperoni but the rest of the toppings I was able to get readings:

I ended up using the suggested pantones as a starting point and lightened up each one to kind of get a ballpark for the colors I wanted. I think if I had better lighting it might have picked up better but I was doing this on the ground in my backyard because I am a professional.

Yes! The purple keys are meant to be red onions. The color isn't the most accurate to what IRL red onions are but I think the color works well with the other colors and since it's supposed to be more of like cartoon pizza I think it works.

Based on the feedback I've been getting from the IC form it's looking like that is probably the route I'll take

I need to confirm with KBM how a separate 40s base will work in terms of MOQ but it's definitely something I'd like to offer!

Hello! I am so sorry I missed your message in January. I had some unfortunate health diagnoses at the end of last year that caused me to take a break from the hobby but I have been easing my way back into things this year. My current to-do is figuring out a way to make this set possible with a different manufacturer given the state of the hobby in 2024 and the demise of KBM.

If anyone still pays attention to this thread lmk your ideas. I will not rest until we have our pizzaaaaaa
