I remember seeing a dissected board having a terrible solder job on an already messy PCB. Is the quality any better these days or should it still be avoided?

That's a good question. I don't know of anyone recently that has bought one. Now that the Adesso and the Rosewill are out, there are better alternatives to the M10 these days.
