Model M's NOT LOUD ENOUGH

Just got a couple of model M's from ebay from 1995 and with all these talk about quieting the model M's, I have to say the two I got were...

NOT LOUD ENOUGH

I used to have one 15 years ago and it was louder.. I swear.

I love the click clack!

Anyone have experience with difference loudness model m's?


p.s. I don't think they were greased either

Or just do what keyboard makers used to do:

  • Add a solenoid
  • Add a beeper

more like a model M2 1993.  I love the click clack....MAKE IT LOUDER!:biggrin:

i want to put microphones in the keyboard and hook it up to my sound system so my neighbors can hear me type

Yep, get a Model F.

Buckling spring goodness of the Model M, and it's even louder, because the hammers on the springs are slapping against a hard PCB (capacitative switches), instead of a cushioned membrane like the ones on the Ms.

You can also modify the acoustics of the case. Reportedly, some Model Ms are pingier than the others because the sound gets amplified or whatever by the case.

Didn't some of the Selectrics have RS-232 ports for use as a printer?  If so, I ought to get one of them some day and hook it up to my PC and have every keystroke echo'd to the Selectric to generate a genuine Selectric sound to the keypress.  There would be a slight delay, but then when typing on the Selectric there's also a delay.  I'm also of the opinion that louder is better and Model M's are too quiet.  Even my Model F could stand to be louder.  For me, I don't think anything will ever beat the mechanical sounds of a Selectric.

What's your desk surface like? What's your desk made of? What kind of room are you in? Can you set something up at the base of the monitor to reflect sound back toward you? Make sure your desk is set up facing a wall and that you don't have any sound-absorbing objects or materials around.

Might an earlier-vintage Model M have a more pleasing resonance? Or perhaps a Model F? With Model Ms I notice the echo of the spring vibrating after it unbuckles, but with Fs it was the whack of it buckling against the barrel.

Also: type faster.
