Ok this actually looks like something I could do.

Probably get a cherry board off ebay. Saw the pcb. Chop up the case.

What else?

I can solder. So if I posted a picture of  PCB could you guys help me out?

I would also need information on a controller and how to get it working with the layers and such.

looks pretty simple to me, like WR said, buy a cherry keyboard, dremel out the rectangle and proceed to rewire.
i would also cut all the traces with the dremel, like i have in my mods, that would not lead to cross tracing.
and you can wire up any controller as long as it's nice and moddable, ppl here use teensy i guess,
i've repurposed logitech controllers cuz of their awesome pins (i've opened up ms keyboards no pins, razer keyboards no pins, bunch of others laying around no pins).
if you want to use a g15v2 red (the version i've used) i'll gladly provide all the pinouts, i've traced every key. (you just have to understand my logic lol)

I found out about the Monkey controller today.
It an entire copy of the Aikon. All they did was change the name and pcb design.

They still use the same Aikon software to program it, lol.

China at its best!

Buy a teensy and code your own :D
Or there's a couple of projects around for teensy keyboard controllers, though the matrix mapping won't be as simple as Aikon.

In seriousness though it depends if you'd find coding or soldering and making a board of some sort harder - since unless you can find someone with a spare or someone selling a clone you'll have to make your own Aikon.

So, out of curiosity, I ran that page through Google translate and it kicked out a gem:

I don't know a lot about monkeys, but I suspect they hate it when you weld up their *******s...

The title was two separate statements. The dude was so bored that he had a "egg-ache" (chinese slang), so he made a 40% keyboard.

In other news, OTD found out about the Chinese rip-off controller that is being sold for profit yesterday. The TaoBao shops have been closed within 12 hours. Legal action may follow, but with China thats kinda unlikely. While the hardware design is "opensource", the software is not and the Chinese guys violated the copyright.

Ontopic: This is a pretty nice mod, though it will be hard to fit it into a bottom case, with all those spaghetti wires.
