Filco Majestouch 2 TKL or full?
« on: Tue, 06 March 2012, 15:12:56 »
Hey!

First of all this is my first post here even though I've been reading the forums for quite a while.

Surprisingly I decided to get a Filco Majestouch 2 with brown switches (dam you make me buy an expensive kb) however I'm a bit concerned should I get the TKL or full version of the kb. I have never had any problems with fullsized keyboards and I sometimes even use the numpad (!) mostly when using bank via the internet. And as an personal opinion I think TKL looks a bit silly as I've never even seen one besises pictures.

But I began thinking about the TKL version because so many of you seem to prefer it over the full version..

If you used a numpad, get a keyboard with a numpad. It seems simple to me.

Welcome to Geekhack!

If you're going to use the numpad on occasion, then I would suggest getting a full-sized keyboard.  I have a TKL myself, and there's only two reasons why: I'm a gamer and prefer to have my mouse and keyboard hands closer together, and I have zero use for a tenkey.  In my experience, it's a lot more comfortable not having to space my hands so far apart when using the computer or playing games as I used to with a full-sized keyboard.  There's also more space available on my desk for other things.

Overall, it comes down to what you're planning on using your keyboard for and the amount of space you have on your desk.  From initial judgment, you might want to stick with a full-sized board.

Enjoy your (permanent) stay!

I used my numpad on rare occasion. I went with a tkl filco mj2 recently and don't regret losing that stupid thing one bit. I love having my hands closer together. :D

Well...I bought the TKL version because I never use the numberpad, and it greatly improved the ergonomics for me. My right hand is now a couple of inches closer to my left hand :D

I just recieved my leopold tkl keyboard. It is absolutely wonderful. The size is awesome. It frees some of my desk space and my hands are closer together. Main point is, if you use the numpad often, get the full. If you don't use a numpad get the TKL.

Filco makes a wireless bluetooth numpad. Wish we could get it in the US.

Make the switch to left-hand mousing.

Get the best of both worlds.

I am so strongly right-handed that I doubted that it would ever work, but about a year ago I saw several posts describing how great it was for right-handed people to free up their dominant hand for writing, phoning, etc, not to mention the fact that the left hand does a lot less reaching.

As a regular numpad-user, I was not prepared to give it up, no matter what, I even bought a laptop with a numpad.

I am in my 50s, so new tricks are hard for old dogs, but it was terrible for a week and awkward for a month, and after that, smooth sailing. Now it seems totally natural. Surely a younger whipper-snapper could make the change a lot easier than I did.

PS - naturally you should get a symmetrical or ambidextrous mouse. if you like those extra buttons for the thumb and whatnot, it may be harder.

Yeah. What I meant was that I use the numpad very seldom and I think I wouldn't regret losing it. I'm just wondering if the TKL is really better for ergonomics etc. And of course I'm sceptical that if there will be that one day when I'd need the numpad once again...

And if I go the 'safe-way' and buy a full one, will I ever regret it?

As fstop mentioned above, there's always the option to buy a TKL with an external TenKeyPad.

Most people here say, that a TKL is way more comfortable in terms of arm-positioning, but the decision is yours.
Also you could always decide for one option and if you absolutely don't like it, sell it and buy the other option.

You can't play FPS that way. Left hand mousing is the idiot invention of some sinister, bastard, ginger, wanker.

I ended up moving from WSAD to RFDG, the biggest factor of this being that shift tabbing into the steam overlay is annoying considering both buttons are used for controls at WSAD. But I guess I get a bit of the TKL effect too.

I would think if you're going for space saving though you may as well get a poker, surely the function row, bar Esc, is more uselss than the numpad in the first place.

Steelseries Xai or Sensei. Both are ambidextrous. I'm right handed and they are my first choice of mice.

What's TKL?

Not sure if trolling.. But it's a Filco keyboard without numpad. TKL comes from "Tenkeyless"

Oh, boy. HWG w/ the TLA BS.

(Here we go with the three letter acyronym bull sh1t.)
Ripster, attack!

BTW, TKL does not infer a Filco product, just a keyboard without the numpad.

There are many key pads to buy.  From the $20 rubber dome specials, to the Filco and Realforce models.

Welcome to GH!

Go for the TKL, unless you REALLY need the num pad. If you decide to get in on keycap set GBs here, the TKL kits will be cheaper than 104 kit :P

Well, already ordered the tenkeyless version and I'll get it from the mail today. I can write my impressions here if you'd like to read them.

Besides, I'm from Finland so I use ISO layout (105?) so I wouldn't get 104 keyset anyway.

However I might be interested in PBT caps, where could I get a set of those?

Thanks

Well I got the keyboard from the mail today and I've been using it for an hour now. First of all I can say that the TKL was deifnitely a good choice. I am already liking that the mouse is alot closer to my keyboard-hand.

As for the brown switches. It's said that these are better for typing than the black ones and I have to agree, even though it took a little time to get used to these. NOW I know what the mechanical keyboards are praised for; the SteelSeries 6Gv2 was nothing against this
