North Gate Keyboard

The first picture is the keyboard itself. The second picture is a comparison with a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000.
It's a Northgate Computer Systems Omni Key 102. The part number is KYBD102P. It is a mechanical switch keyboard. It has this strange thing where the function keys normally should be. My first thought is that it was a touch pad, but after looking like an idiot for a few minutes, I realized it wasn't. The keyboard itself is very heavy, probably around two to three pounds. I've seen places saying that this keyboard was among one of the best keyboards available at the time, second only to the IBM Model M.
The keyboard itself is peculiar. I have yet to see any pictures of this exact layout. I've seen ones similar, but they lacked the isolated ESC key, the windows key, and the alt key. The Function keys are located on the side. I've seen this in a few other models. The up arrow key also has a light, like the caps lock, num lock and scroll lock. I've yet to figure out how to activate the light. It has a door on the upper left. I've read that it was used to program the keyboard on the Ultra models. It reads "programmable" on the back sticker.
It's in very good shape. All of the keys work, and all the lights work. It's in amazing condition, nearly new. The only fault is that the rubber around the PS2 connector has been cut back with a knife. I assume this is so it could fit in a modern port. I saw one going for 174USD on ebay, however I feel I could get around 100 to 150 USD for it. I don't exactly know much else about this keyboard. If anyone would like anymore pictures of it, I can take some. Thanks, Reddit.

This was my friends post on Reddit, and he asked me to post it up here as well.

Any additional information on this keyboard would be much appreciated.

This is the link to the original Reddit thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/uyj7z/can_someone_help_determine_the_worthrarity_of/

Thank you very much.

Looks a lot like mine (below) except I have alps switches on the top function key row rather than the membrane keys.

I have owned these with and without the function keys at the top. Always seemed silly to me to make the board big and heavy enough for them, but not put them in.

I suspect that the board weighs upwards of 4 pounds.

They are nice boards, but I have never gotten more than $50-75 for one. If it had the blue Alps instead of white, it would be worth a lot more.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

You wanna sell it?

In excellent condition, expect around $80-120
But if it's heavily used (dinged, shiny keys, dirty), I can't imagine it going for over $60.

OmniKeys were seriously some of the best home pc keyboards ever made. I'd keep it just as a collectors' item.

It's a 102 which was an older style but went through an evolution at Northgate.  Yours was made later on due to the trap door label and the fact that it has windows keys.  It has simplified ALPS clicky + tactile key switches which are most likely the "Fukka" variety (see ALPS wiki for more info on this site)
Many mid to late 80's keyboards had F keys on the left side of the keyboard.  Northgate keyboards bragged about being as good as IBM keyboards for a fraction of the money in their ads.  IBM owners were targeted and their layouts were very similar.  The 102 was like a hybrid between a Model M and Model F from IBM.  They also chose to focus on keyboard quality to make their computer business stand out.  As for weight, many topped 5lbs and had the thickest backplate of any post 1986 mechanical keyboard.

Later they introduced models with F keys to left and to the top such as the Ultra and Ultra plus and eventually dropped the left F keys for the 101.

IBM PC AT Model F with left F keys

1988 Nortgate 102 with Metal Gold label (This is mine)

Early 90's 102, no trap door, winkeys or programming light in arrow key.

Yours would have been mid to later 90's era like the 101's I was selling a while ago.  Note the 101's arrow key light like your 102

I have most of the original Northgate manuals in print but haven't scanned them yet.  There are some manuals here though

More Northgate preaching here
(I took my site down and threw some of the content on wordpress but it's broken along with my old image links.  Sorry)

I suspected didjamatic would be making an appearance in this thread and educate us all and he didn't disappoint.

Didja outbid me on a passel of dirty old vintage cherry gear from some podunk town in south dakota...
I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM FOR THIS.

Haha, were they the white ones or black & gray?

The white cleaned up nice, here's one (pic yellow but board isn't) Had black MX and I did a swap to Blues.  My first and only solderless switch swap.  After that I preferred to desolder and do the entire switch rather than pop tops.

The blacks ended up being key cap donors.  I wish I would have saved the gray cases.  They were heavy duty industrial gray plastic.  Never seen another cherry board with a case like them.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Haha, yep that's one of them above.  Took a lot of time and effort to get it clean though.
I never bothered with the hitek space invader board.  It wasn't worth saving due to condition.
