It's used for fast transcription into shorthand format. One would need to be specifically trained to do that, but it's generally the fastest means of typing "plain" text out (after translation) [ymmv]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't stenographers type using phonetics? In other words, this is not a character-accurate input method, is it?

So, it's useless for anything but spoken words. For example, it can't be used for games, apps, programming, even forum posting beyond the basics.

I have often wondered if there was a modern stenography machine that could be used for character-accurate input.
