Got water in my filco majestouch 2 tenkeyless :(
« on: Sat, 02 July 2011, 21:27:57 »
The spill hit around the backspace , home, and insert area. I got the water out using tissues and drained the water out, by tiliting the keyboard to one side. When I got back to typing the keyboard I noticed some keys didnt respond with their correct numbers and letters. Has my keyboard short-circuited? Is there anything I can do to fix this? Please help me GH!

You may have hit the controller with the water, as it's mounted between the arrow keys and the page up/down block.
How long did you wait until you tried it out if it works?

I tried it right after. I shut down my computer and try to log back in, only to find that backspace shutsdown the computer and some numbers will be 2 numbers( 9= 9 & 0)
I'm currently hooked on to my old membrane keyboard so that's why I was able to get in. Can I get it repaired some place?

It's best to let it air out for a while, overnight at the least. Unplugged, mind you! You don't want voltage shooting through it if there is a short.

And welcome to Geekhack.

Hmm the water could be everywhere. Worst case inside the switch, because you didn't let it dry before typing on it again.
I'd say let it dry for a few days, unplugged. Remove all the keycaps to get more air exposure, instructions here: http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:12649
Also, don't use windex.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Sad to see this happened to you man. After any liquid got in your keyboard, never plug it back in and make tests right after you think you got it cleaned. Wait an extra day or two, and then perhaps try it.

Best of lucks with your Filco!

My friend said to let it dry for a week sideways just to be safe. I think it will be ok :\

a week is overkill.

that is like when your tech guy tells you to unplug your router for 10min and then reboot it.

It should be fine. Just prop it in front of a fan for a couple of days and hope for the best.

Heh, yeah, it sure sounds like overkill. Erring on the side of caution isn't bad though... Personally, my favorite is when a tech picks some really random time and make it sound like gospel. Don't unplug the router, unplug it for thirty three seconds.

I once spilled almost a whole glass of water in an old MacBook Pro. Luckily it was one where I could remove the battery (still confused by the non-removable battery design). I turned it upside down immediately on top of a fan and let it dry overnight. Worked perfectly the next morning. Your board should be fine as long as the water in the switches dries.

This is one advantage of mechanical boards and good PCBs. I spilled some milk on an old Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard a number of years ago and the plastic wiring housing separated right quick, board was almost instantly perma-dead.

Those controllers operate on low voltages, but I guess it doesn't take much to fry the micrometer thin insides.

I'm pretty sure it's the same guy at OCN.  Not working.

Surprised since even my Sansa Clip survived hitting the toilet while peeing.

It fizzed off immediately but works fine now after a opening and Datavac drying.  You might go Ewwww.... but it's Sanitary and I LIKE the taste of it.

Ok, thanks. I'm not that sad now because my brand new leopold with cherry MX brown switches came! After about 4 months with CA Post messing up, the beauty finally came. That's why I ordered the filco in the first place because I thought the Leopold was gone. Now I have 2 keyboards ^.^. Leopold feels stiffer than the filco, but I guess I'm going to have to get use to it either way.
