Cherry black doubleshot ISO backslash
« on: Sat, 09 July 2011, 19:54:51 »
subject says all... got a Cherry G80 POS board and a G81 black w/ doubleshots... want to use the doubleshots on the POS to get the arrows etc. on the numpad.  Need ISO backslash/pipe to make it work. (I think I will leave the grey keys grey, unless someone has a black POS board that they've harvested the clears from - too many don't match.)  I may try to mod this to use the doubleshots if I get a real bug up my behind, but not today...

thanks!

I thought you were going to mod the board to ansi.

I may, but I'm going to need something to type on at work on Monday!  (this actually kind of sounds like me with cars before I got a job with a company car...)

edit: just realized, if I did that, I'd need to replace ALL the keys if I used the black doubleshots...  the shift, ctrl, super, alt, space, menu etc. are all different sizes because the G81 is a narrow board similar to a Compaq 11802 (just without the trackball... or acceptable key switches...) so I'd end up with all my non-alphanumerics grey except for a black enter... would look weird...

I guess I should look for a black POS board for one to mod into an uber-board if I'm so inclined...

Since you actually need it to work, you may want to wait a bit on trying to mod it to ANSI. I'm planning on giving it a try as soon as one arrives at my door. If it works, I'll be posting it in the mods section, then possibly seeing how far I can manage to rearrange it. If I can split the backspace key, I certainly will. Maybe make use of one of the programmable switches in order to do that.

Anyway, if I can make it work, I will pass on the info. If I can't, I'll pass that along as well.

Did you already order one?

And I like how we've moved one conversation to multiple threads.

see the post I just made in "great deals" - there's a black doubleshot NOS version of this board on eBay right now.  I don't really need to spend $100 on a keyboard right now but it is tempting.

It is still ISO however, but I do have ANSI black doubleshots (on a G81 board) and I did pull one to verify that they are in fact DS and MX compatible so...thinkin'...  only thing I would need to make that perfect would be a 2x numpad zero key with "INS" printed on it... I have everything else (except for free time and money) to fix my two complaints about the G80-8200 if I bought the one on eBay.  (complaints are: ISO enter and only numbers are printed on numpad keys.  I suppose you could count "lack of doubleshots" as a complaint as well, but most keyboards don't have 'em these days...)

Eh, for me I prefer the more durable PBT keys. Doubleshots are supposed to shine more easily, so I think I won't get them on purpose.

That and as soon as it gets here I have rit dye to fix the color issue on the keys.

Mine already have a little shine to 'em, but if I use 'em long enough they'll all be shiny, so who cares?

But if anyone has pretty much *any* black ISO backslash (single width) I don't use that key all that often so it's "close enough..."

I really want to use the doubleshots not because of their intrinsic doubleshotness, but because the numpad on the original keys of my new favorite keyboard don't have the arrows etc. on them and the DS's do.  And the keys from my Compaq, which is the only other Cherry board that I have laying around, are significantly whiter than the Cherry keys so it'd look just as odd if I used those, and the numpad add is 2x not 1x so I couldn't even use that one.
