Need help choosing a new keyboard
« on: Mon, 11 July 2011, 18:40:48 »
So for the past 6 months I've been using a Das Ultimate cherry blue switch keyboard. It made me fall in love with mechanical keyboards, but... For some reason the blue switch is too sensitive for me. After years of using membrane keyboards I slam and slam on they keys. I bottom out all the time and I make so many errors, my hands are not the smallest so sometimes I barely hit a key and it goes off. I've been reading about cherry black keyboards and how it takes more pressure to press them down. I love the feeling of the Das but it's not for me. What keyboards do you guys recommend, I do a lot of gaming like starcraft and fps. What do you guys think? And thank you for helping me out.

Then try a cherry clear board (Deck Legend tactile, some Cherry boards) or a buckling spring (IBM model M/M2/M13 or an Unicomp model)

Lots of options. Do you like the clicky feeling/sound if the blues? If so you could find a pcb mounted board and use black springs with blue stems. Or you might like an old model M, they are stiff and clicky.

You could also go with clears. They are stiff like blacks but have a tactile feeling like blues.
Check out my sales thread.

If you like the tactile feel of the blues but don't care about the click, try some clears.  This is actually a surprisingly nice feeling board, especially for the money.

Probably not something you want sitting on your desk if you actually care how it looks, but I've been using one for a couple days now and the feel of the clears is fantastic.  Unfortunately AFAIK the only boards on the market that you can get new with MX clears are made by Cherry or Deck and neither is cheap.  So you might as well try the POS board and see if you like it before committing.
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

I don't like the sound and the feel is iffy, and the feel isn't so great for me. I think i bottom out so bad that the feeling doesn't even matter, haha.

Then you probably want to try Deck Frost with clear. I'm returning it because the keys are too hard for my weakly fingers.

Yes, sure. Deck's designer should be in drugs or dead many years ago, btw the Deck is the only clear board sold officially in the US.

The other option is a Cherry board or the manual replacement of the switches

Yeah that looks like something my nephew would make. I guess I should just get a cherry black board then. Which brand do you guys like the most I was looking at leopolds, they are shipping new ones soon. But that Filco on amazon looks to tempting.

Not sure if you made a decision or not. I was in the same boat as you. I bought a black switch and while it is perfect for me for gaming, I was making too many mistakes typing because of the linear feeling of it. It just takes the slightest push for the key to register. It can lead to a buttload of mistakes if you type crazy (like me!).

I was suggested to get a Unicomp Spavesaver Buckling Spring. It came in today and I love it. I wish it was a little harder to press personally, but it is very nice and an improvment.

I would not recoomentd getting the blacks for the typing problem you have. In-fact, because of the black switches being too easy to press, I was considaring getting a blue switch. Ironic?

I'm kinda happy I ordered it from them so if I don't like the black switch I can just exchange it :D I love amazon prime it's getting here tomorrow.
Oh, so you did order it. How do you feel about it? :boink:
