Topres - HHKB Pro vs. Realforce 86U vs. 87U Silent
« on: Sat, 06 August 2011, 05:28:50 »
I can certainly see the differences in the physical set up of each board but what I'm looking for is some comparison between the key feel and sound between the different boards.  I currently have the variable weighted 86U.  I like the feel of the variable weights so that is fine for me. I'm not really crazy about the sound of the kick back of the keys. I know that "thocking" sound is what most people like about the topres. I don't hate the sound but do wish it were a little more subtle.  Additionally I'm thinking I might want to try a more compact style - thus the HHKB pro. Is there a HHKB Pro in the silent version?

I guess my questions for those that have tried them:

Are the silent topres really much quieter and is their feel any different?
Do the HHKB pro topres have the same feel and sound as the 86U?

I'm vacillating on whether to buy one of those new silent 87U's but really don't want to lay out the additional cash unless it's going to be so much better than the 86U that I currently have.
Current in order of preference:  RealForce 87U Silent White with variable weighted keys X 2, Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless with Linear Reds, Filco Number-pad, Poker with Linear Reds

Sold or returned:  Multiple Microsoft and Logitech keyboards, Das Keyboard Silent, Cherry 6140, RealForce 103UB, RealForce 86U, Filco Majestouch 2 full sized with Linear Reds

The HHKB Pro2 does indeed come in silent flavour as well - with a 50% price-premium over the regular version (through Chinese retailers).

This is not first hand information, but from what I can gather. The Silent Topre borders don't have a different feel or stroke. The only thing effected is the sound reduction when the keys snap back after release from a key press.

The Realforce has a different sound than the HHKB due to construction, size, build, etc. For example, Realforce slider housing mounted on a plate, while the HHKB's slide housing is part of the keyboard's plastic frame. This will result in a different sound.

The key feel for the HHKB compared to the Realforce is the same, or at least I can't tell the difference comparing it to my friends HHKB.
