Buying my first board
« on: Wed, 10 August 2011, 14:31:36 »
I've been looking around for the past week and a half and I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get myself a proper keyboard.

Originally I was thinking of getting a minimal keyboard that I could take with me to use with my work laptop, but the layouts are a bit scary for a first timer.  So I'm just getting a standard board for home use first.

So far, I've got it narrowed down to wanting a tenkeyless with brown switches, and I'm leaning toward a Filco Ninja.  I know the front face legend is a "gimmick" of sorts, but it does look really slick (feels like the sweet spot between otaku keys and a "traditional" legend).

I guess what I've come here to ask is, am I making a good choice with the Ninja, or are there other options I should consider first?  Thanks in advance for any advice!

Switch choice is more important. Keycaps can be changed. I'm not into ninja look. I prefer engraved keycaps.

Yes, you should really consider some blue switches too. The caps will get shiny pretty soon anyway, ninja or no ninja.

Yeah, I figure keycaps are purely preference.  I guess what I meant to ask in OP is if Filco is a good way to go, or if I should look at other manufacturers.

I was ruling blue's out since they sound pretty loud in youtube videos, but maybe I'll run to Best Buy soon and play with a Black Widow to hear them in person.  Hopefully key shine won't bother me in the end, since it seems to be inevitable for most keys.

But you've got your token Ducky to show that you're not COMPLETELY biased =p

I'd say repeat buyers in a market with plenty of options show that a brand is trustworthy.  Either that or they have an effective marketing department.

A Filco commercial? Hmmm... I was going to try a Leopold but I didn't want to take a chance. Maybe it's better than Filco (don't think so). Ripster will say that Leopold has unlimited NKRO.

You have to work at it several decades to get some shine on some keys.

Aside the keys, Filco quality is pretty, pretty good.

If money is not an issue, go with a filco. I love the quality of the board and it feels really satisfying to type on. Plus, you're buying name brand :)

What, that looks like a model m.

They keep saying that as far as getting shiny, filco abs keys are some of the worst.

A model m pbt key is probably the best for that.

Key shine isn't a huge concern for me, so that aside, sounds like I'm heading in the right direction with Filco :D

One other thing that's hopefully not a real concern, the only brown tenkeyless ninja I see on Amazon right now is marked as "Used - Like New" but still fulfilled through Amazon... would this be an RMA board or what? http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004ZJPSGI/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1312994113&sr=1-4&condition=used

The general set of stuff that I've seen is ansi. Even that is generally from asia somewhere, so checking in group buys or getting it straight from taobao somehow would be most likely. I have not seen them with those specialized keys, but that doesn't mean much.

Okay well I don't know if I can trust a "used" board coming from Amazon and don't know when they will get any new ones in stock, so I'm thinking I should look at additional options.  Leopold, Ducky, any other TKL makers I should look at?  Part of why I wanted to go straight for Filco was the ninja caps, so I guess there's more room for persuasion now.

Get a Filco Ninja and enjoy it if that's what you like.  There is no beginners Otaku... a blank keyboard is for beginner touch typists because advanced typists don't look at their hands and therefore don't care if it's blank, has legends or is shiny for that matter.

With that said, I have enjoyed my blank Filco immensely.   I also quite like the look of the Filco Ninja.

Wat. I care very much if it's shiny. Not at all from a legends-are-fading standpoint, but from a man-these-shiny-keys-feel-funny standpoint.

Most of what people call (mistakenly) quality in the Filcos boards is the different sound made with its default keycaps they sound more crisp because the different kind (more rigid) of ABS used, btw the keycaps are, at the same time, the Achilles' heel of such boards, so most of the people spend 60$ more because the original keycaps and quickly change them, spending more money, and loosing the only real "advantage" over other boards at the same time.

BTW if you like the ninja, the keycap replacement is not mandatory, so if you find the premium price worth you can safely get one.

So you're saying people consider Filco to be better because their stock caps sound better?  I do see myself eventually replacing the caps, but that's probably months or even a year out** and not on my agenda of things to do as soon as I unbox it.

At that point, would I find myself with a worse board, or about the same as if I had gone with a Leopold instead?  Overall build quality is still important, which is why I ask.  On the subject of swapping keys though, are there windowed replacements for Leopolds?

I meant to ask if the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keys in Leopold replacements sets would have clear spots on them for the LEDs, not the windows keys.  I'm still new so my terminology may be off, but those are referred to as windows on the keys, right?

I agree, that if you are prepared to spend money and want a new product, go for Filco. Either blue switch (more pronounced, a bit harder) or brown (less pronounced, lighter, good for zapping), you can make a half-random guess based on what you think you'd like. IMHO Filco will be good and you might as well save yourself time dealing with other Cherry-switched keyboards until you find one that you like.

For that matter, I'm typing on a tenkeyless blue-switched Filco right now. They keys are shiny and I like it this way (because this is a working machine, not a HTPC).

If you're feeling more adventurous and have time to burn, I'd go looking for a real, old IBM Model M (giving a try to any other old mechanical keyboard you find in the process if the cost is like a couple of bucks). Close to the same but reportedly a little different are Unicomp keyboards, which are new keyboards produced on the same factory line by new owners of the factory (former IBM workers AFAIK). AFAIK, Unicomp are open to some customisation on demand, might be fun.

Occasionally, there are discounts or sales available online, where you can buy something for like half the price, though it won't be a Filco. ;)
