Same Keyboard Question
« on: Tue, 20 September 2011, 07:24:47 »
Checked out this forum in the past and i find myself back here again after
seeing several mechanical keyboards released from "gaming companies"

Figured i might try to pick one up as my dome seems to be wearing out.. but its seems hard to tell the
keyboards apart unless you look at the reviews and then your subject to a lot more personal bias and misinformation

So i figure if im going to get misinformation i should probably do it here(where more people may know
what their talking about)

So onto the question thats been asked a million times " what keyboard should i get "

I've looked into it a bit and i figure im aiming for either blues or browns(as usual) my issue here is sound / feedback
ive never used a mechanical keyboard so i have no idea what kind of sound it will make ... apparently its louder than you'd expect
( cant be helped i guess ) but how loud is it ? would someone have an issue with it if they were in the same room? or would it be hard
to hear a tv while typing? and how does the blue compare to the brown.. the brown is non clicky(clearly more subtle/silent) but ive seen
people say there isnt a whole lot of difference between them(no clue) ...

as far as feedback goes apparently the blues are more crisp.. which i think i'd like .. but they also are louder and actuate before?? or after it gives tactile
feedback causing potential for double tap which the brown does not have as it actuates and gives feedback at the same point.. but at the same time browns
could be described as being more 'mushy' and the auditory feedback is far less satisfying

i do game a bit (usually RTS Starcraft, warcraft) ...im pretty sure i want a tenkeyless but if the value is there i would consider a full..and i dont really need extra features
although choice ones may be nice....definitely no gimmicky 'stuff'... ive narrowed it down to these keyboards.. not really looking for anymore options as i think ive looked
around the forum and think i know what i want for the most part so im left with

Filco (overall good quality / no extra features / full/tkl )  140-150$ though Keyboard Co  (good but overpriced)
WASD ( good quality / only full available )  120$  (seem good but no TKL and not really interested in custom keys)
Leopold ( decent quality? / issues with stabilizers? space bar? / detachable cable / full/tkl ) 120-125 from Elitekb ( middle ground price wise.. build quality questions )
Ducky/ocn ( decent quality? / issues with stabilizers /different types of switches on some keys? / full/tkl / detachable cable /stupid logos) 90-95 from Tankguys ( leaning towards this as its cheap/good quality? pending issues)
Rosewillv2 ( good quality / new?(unkown issues?) / no tkl available and only blue) 100 from newegg ( may be cheaper with sales? )

right now im leaning towards the ducky as its one of the cheapest and has more options then the rosewill .. but ive seen it may have issues with the board being warped??(maybe not this model) and it might use different switches for things like the spacebar?? ... the wiki says the rosewill occasionally goes on sale though so it may be worth the lack of options

the filco/wasd seems more expensive for the same thing(but wire stabilizers people seem to have less issues with?) and leo is in the middle ground somewhere

also with all these companies releasing new mechanical keyboards and it being near the holidays and all i could wait.. although all of the boards from gaming companies so far
seem iffy or gimmicky at best and not usually priced better

anyways just looking for some opinions or details on the flaws of each board as none really have advantages (clear value or feature wise)
and i guess some personal opinions on switch difference ( i understand browns are the most common 'middleground' option )

i thankyou if you have taken the time to read this. i will look more into the audio clips and reviews subforum, if you would please dont post short detail'less or extremely bias responses (ripster!)
i hope this is well written enough  :sorry:

According to the designer of both Filco and Leopold, Leopold should actually be better than Filco. The Duckies seem to have a great reputation, too.

As for what's crispy or crispier, that's harder to tell. IMHO the browns are also crispy, except in a different way. I'd imagine them as allowing for faster typing overall, well, certainly faster per se, not sure about speed to accuracy ratios, as I broke my only browns keyboard and haven't been able to use it since; currently typing on a blue tenkeyless Filco. I like the keyboard a lot but I'm beginning to have thoughts about browns because of the strain on my fingers. It's more difficult to avoid bottoming out than it was on IBM Model M, I think, and keyboard resistance does seem to be slowing me down compared to what if it were less, such as e.g. on browns. The browns are believed to be ergonomic because they're still tactile while providing less resistance than the blues (which doesn't necessarily translate directly into less typing effort since adjustment to insufficient resistance could perhaps also be burdensome). I suppose with both keyboards it helps to be an accurate typist since with the blues it saves you going back (which is a bit of a strain) and with the browns it allows you to keep up with the possible speed.

As far as gaming companies go, Razer has made a blues keyboard (Blackwidow, ordinary or Ultimate with lights), Steelseries the 7G and 6Gv2 keyboards with black switches (7G has a hand rest and perhaps some more stuff, 6Gv2 is minimalistic), Thermaltake a Meka keyboard with blues (basic Meka, which is compact but has all keys, Meka G1 that looks like a Steelseries 7G and is full-sized with all keys, standard layout and edges just after the last keys, Meka G-Unit that has a double column of additional keys on the left and is more sculpted than G1).

Please note that claims to unique properties aren't exactly unique among the companies. ;) I'm also not sure which of the claims to some specific gaming-related advantages are actually unique to a particular keyboard as opposed to any mech keyboard in general.

Edit: it seems Razer has recently also released a different, Stealth edition of both Blackwidow keyboards, which seems to have 45 g force and 2 mm distance, suggesting browns. Not sure about the 2 mm distance, may be reduced compared to the normal keyboard but I don't know. Looks quite attractive to me but I'm not buying anything from Razer since they behave like a sect and I don't like that.

I too am waiting on my first board ( I went with WASD based on some reviews and the owners comments here on the forums ) but from what I understand : ( Take with grain of salt )

Blue vs Brown.   If you listen to Youtube vidoes ( I think I heard them all )  it seems the Browns are just as loud but mainly a different pitch unless you do not bottom out/install dampeners.  The Browns tend to have a more full bodied sound as they bottom out on the board. Where as the blues will have the bottom out + a high pitched Click ( much like a mouse click only a little louder )  I enjoy the higher pitched sound and can only antipitate the tactile feel as something I would like.   I know I like browns , so if the blues don't feel as good as I had hoped I know I can always fall back on the browns.

Browns aren't so much mushy as they just have a much smaller tactile bump and have less force needed to actuate. (very small force difference).

WASD plans to offer TKL sometime next year IF they get enough sales from the initial offerings.
I originally wanted Filco , but mainly for the TKL  and the TKL is hard to get with blue switches here in the US.
If I have any issues with my Cherry Blue WASD then I will likely go with a Filco Browns TKL Ninja.

As for the Corsair.  That seems like it would be strictly for gaming only as the raised and angled key-caps would get very annoying when trying to type in game.

Your title is fine....   It's just that this question is asked about 4 times a day....  Ultimately , through the Wiki's and scanning others posts you have to make a decision for yourself.     From what I understand the Ducky/Leopold stabalizers are not really an issue.... just different.   Some prefer them , some don't.  It's a matter of preference of the forums.   OCN seems to be all about the " gaming" boards like Black Widow , Steel Series, Ducky.

Here it's more of the : Das/Leopold/Filco/WASD

Somewhere on here you will see that :

Topre Switches > WASD/Filco/Das  ( these three all being from the same factory and very similar build quality ) > Leopold/Cherry/Ducky>Black widow.

Bottom line , it's all subjectional and all of the facts are here to read.... the rest is opinion based on experience.

yea sorry about the same question.. ive looked at the wiki and around the forums a bit and was just worried about the issues people posted in the forums (hard to tell if its isolated issues or flaws in certain batches or just bad products) as there isnt really a large amount of reviews on alot of these boards(as there may be on more mainstream products) i will take one more look on amazon(for reviews maybe) and roll the dice i guess :D  thnx

I would be wary of any Review that is  " OMG THEES ESS TEH BEST EVAR !!!! "   That's one of the reasons that I likely won't be doing a review of my WASD ... Simply because I don't have the experience to compare it to anything except for umpteen Dell/Saitek  Rubber domes.  So no matter how awesome I think it is .... I have no real point of reference at that level.

I typically try and find as many reviews as possible that list bads as well as goods.  No prodct is perfect , and if I don't see several bad items then I get wary.  I prefer to see the suggested bads and see if that is something I can deal with along with the goods.

For instance  : Blue cherries in gaming /sound ....   I chose blue for the typing and think I can live with the gaming flaws of that switch as I also like the sound from what I've heard.
Filco Ping : I don't think I can deal with that at that price range, even though it is likely over exaggerated .... but too many posts on it across the net since Amazon started shipping.
WASD :  No TKL option ... but then I've never had a TKL board , so I am fine with that based on other review responses.  My next board will likely be a TKL in browns... and I will hope that WASD is offering it by then and maintains the same level of quality.
