Found a Sun Type 6 USB keyboard
« on: Fri, 04 November 2011, 15:21:51 »
So I was poking around my university yesterday (let's just say that Apple comes to take recycled technology and we help lighten the load) and I came across a decent Sun Type 6 USB keyboard. It looked like someone spilled something on it and got a haircut over it but I cleaned it up and now it looks like new. Anyway, the keyboard works fine as far as I can tell (I'm using it now). I normally use a model M but it's hard to write papers at 1 in the morning with a Model M when roommates are trying to sleep. I don't think the keyboard is anything special but it does have some nifty buttons to the left that say things like "Copy" and "Again", which I'll map to useful things in the near future.

I was just wondering if anyone uses a Sun Type 6 and whether they like it. It's really squishy and some of the keys are in strange places (my tilde and backtick are where my backspace normally would be, so sometimes my sentences look like this``````` before I realize what I'm doing =P) but otherwise it's not bad.

Type 5's were so much nicer IMHO.  Also you can get Sun KBs in either Unix or whatever they call the other layout... I can't tell you which one you have by the keys you chose to name :)

I believe the layout of the backspace is the same as what is used on the happy hacking keyboards, and I also have to say that I love that layout a lot more after using it with my HHKB Lite II. The backspace directly above enter along with esc being in the far corner instead of `~ has improved my usability in the long run of the keyboard. Compact + great design is never something to be unhappy about. But I think the Type 6 is pretty darn big, so I am not sure you would want to use it long term on a desk. http://comedialabs.com/images-matti/lite2.jpg Such a nice compact design of the HHKB Lite II.
By the way, how do so many people have such easy access to recycling centers, and how can I find one I can sift through in my area?
Current collection: Filco Tenkeyless MX Brown, IBM Model M, Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite II, Dell AT101W.
Looking for: IBM Model M SpaceSaver, HHKB Topre keychain. >> Feedback Thread

Unix layout... (I go by the position of the Caps Lock/Control)  :)

The Type 5 is less curvy... every single piece of it.  The keycaps and case all have sharper edges.  As far as rubber domes go I prefer the Type 5 over the rest of them... and I think the Type 7 is even further down hill from there than the type 6.

Having gone through lots of those keyboards is what lead me to the HHKB in the first place. That layout is so hard to find on a high quality keyboard, which is part of the reason that I use a converted Model [MF]. I have one of those hooked up to my system though, in case one of the IT folks needs to use my machine, since the remapping on my IBM is software based, rather than hardware.

Those keys on the left hand side are kind of a pain to get working in windows, just as a warning, as is the unlabeled key in the "normal" ESC location.
HHKB Pro 2 -- Custom UNIX layout Unicomp Customizer 101 -- IBM Model M 1391401 (modded to UNIX layout) -- IBM 1397000 (also UNIX layout) -- SSK in UNIX layout -- Model F 122 key in UNIX layout (Soarer USB "native")

CST L-TracX trackball -- Kensington Expert Mouse trackball

Yeah, I tried once getting those keys to be usable... was quite a few years ago tho.  Never did succeed before I moved on to another KB.

You guys weren't kidding about it being difficult to remap the keys! I tried to use Autohotkey to get the scan codes but that didn't work, so I arbitrarily entered a bunch of scan codes to see what would happen and that failed as well. Theferenc, what did you do to get these keys working? (I want my hours of cleaning to be worth something lol.)
