My S key double-taps
« on: Thu, 13 October 2011, 16:20:29 »
Hey, I've got a problem with my Razer Black Widow keyboard (MX blues).

All of a sudden for the past week or so, I've been making a lot of typos double-tapping the S key...

It doesn't happen consistently with every keystroke and I've been wondering perhaps if my finger has just been twitchy hitting that key for someone reason, and I'm actually double-tapping it myself. I'm starting to think maybe it's the key itself though.

For example I'd be typing fine (I usually have really good accuracy), and I'd make a typo like "thiss".

I've only noticed a problem with a double-tap, not 3 or 4 or anything.

It's occurred to me that I play zerg, so I spam the S key quite a bit... I'm also a very heavy-fingered typist. I always sounds like I'm hammering my keyboard with my fingers.

I have tried tapping the S key to see if I could reproduce the problem when I know I'm making single strokes, and yes, I can reproduce the problem, though it takes a lot of tries...

Does this problem have a name that I can google? I'm sure I heard of this before but can't remember where. Or can anyone offer a bit of insight? Thanks!

i think your switch is messed up, how good are you at soldering? solder out your "s" switch and swap it with a useless key like scroll lock or whatever. it could be your stem... but i think it's the switch itself (the cherry gold leafs) that are messed up, so yea really that's all i can recommend. black widow is plate mounted so really the only way to get at the switch is to desolder, you could try taking off the keycap and giving a press of compressed air into the switch/stem, not like it'll help but something you could try and less invasive than desoldering (don't think it'll help).
anyone else have noodles and ripster on ignore? it's like 3 lines of ignore/ignore/ignore lol.

Thanks Ripster, gives me somewhere to start looking at least. But it sounds like if this was just regular keybounce, then the problem would be the driver settings....

But since this only seems to occur with the S key, like Lanx said, it could have something specifically going on with that switch...

To be honest I'm far from experienced with soldering, but whatever, this key's driving me nuts so I'm willing to try anything. Otherwise maybe I'll pick up a DAS or something...

25ish bucks to buy a solder iron and a solder sucker(solder wick/braid) heck most "computer tool kits" come with it, i'd give that a try first, but you really should try the compressed air into the stem/switch first your blues might be sticking to the stem (the clacking part).

Ripster, I'm not ignoring your advice. I read the wiki's under the heading "Wiki" at the top of this page. The one mentioning "Chattering" was http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=START+HERE+--+The+Geekhack+Mechanical+Keyboard+Guide+-+Includes+Glossary+and+Links

Sounds like you're referring to another wiki though, because that one didn't offer the answer, though it did explain what's probably happening. I searched the forum and searched google for a "Cherry Wiki". I've skimmed your subforum, too. Toss an idiot a bone and point me in the right direction of this "Cherry Wiki"? Sorry to be difficult.

That's exactly what's happening, it's key bounce.  Chattering has nothing to do with driver settings it's a bad interaction between the switch and the firmware and it's caused by a bad switch*.  Replace the switch, fix the problem.

*It can be the firmware, too, but the whole board would probably act improperly.

Alright, thanks, I thought there mighta been something more I was missing...

Fair enough, I'll see what I can do to replace the switch, thanks for helping :)

(I'll try the compresses air, too... Couldn't hurt)

*Or some crap inside the switch. If people claim that blowing compressed air helps, I would try this before attempting to learn soldering on this keyboard.

Thank God!  Thought this was another write up of the Rosewill keyboard controller having double tap issues.  It's some other brand though. All is well.

I mean... double taps, how awful.  You should try to fix it and stuff. ;)

In all seriousness though, it sounds to be completely isolated to that one switch.  Replacing it would likely fix it.
