Anyone Built a keyboard from Scratch??

Has anyone here actually built a key board (or tried to) from scratch, instead of just modifying? As in purchase micro controller, design circuit board, ect...
I have been looking at the chips available for doing this on the Texas Instruments and ATMEL web sites and trying to figure out how hard/ how much work it would be.
