Looking for a Mechanical Keyboard. have questions for the pros.
« on: Sun, 20 November 2011, 18:34:46 »
hey everyone..
this is officially my first post on here!! YAAAYY
anyways i hail from the great north CANADA!
it's time i do away with my logitech 650 and it's driving me nuts that i need to replace this keyboard with another logitech every single year due to worn out shift keys and space bars.
anyways i did some looking around and the CMSTORM Quickfire Rapid RED switch was definitely the model I wanted as it had everything i wanted in a keyboard.

Tenkeyless
NKRO
Red Switches (from the description this is what a user that switches from typing to gaming on the fly would want)

anyways I currently own the cm storm sentinel advance and loved it so buying again from them especially at that price tag makes me real comfortable.. but there are problems...
apparently and from what i read here model SGK-4000-GKCR1 and now from what i read here there is another model SGK-4000-GKCR1-TC are not available in any other region??
Why on earth would they do this? I am in CANADA and I really want this keyboard.

Upon looking further for more keyboards that fit the description I found a few others...

The Leopold "Tenkeyless" Linear Touch Keyboard Model: FC200RR/AB
found here httx://w w w .elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,tenkeyless&pid=fc200rrab

and

The Filco Majestouch linear r limited edition Model: FKBN87MR/EB2
found here httx://w w w .diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=746

Now I am going nuts trying to find a place that sells these keyboards and ships to Canada.
I am new to this whole mechanical keyboard thing but from the ones i have personally tried this is the way to go for a gamer and work at home tech as myself.

I have a few questions as well for some of you...

Undarken - since you have Cmstorm quickfire rapid were you able to mod the cherry switches to other color types without soldering?

markclgw - if i cannot source a Cmstorm quickfire rapid RED model keyboard can your button mods work on a FILCO or Leopold keyboard?

EVERYONE - anyone know where I can buy any of the above keyboards from a reputable member or online retailer that ships to Canada?

the reason for my above questions is that i read that some of the switches are better for typing and others better for gaming. i wanted to mod the space bar, enter and shift keys with a switch like the black since i hammer those down more and seem to wear them on normal keyboards as history shows. i mostly use `1234, QWER, ASDF, for gaming so i did want some sort of tactile feel back so i was thinking brown switches would be good to use here for gaming.

I apologize if some of my questions seem noobish but I just want to make sure if I am going to spend money on a good keyboard and shipping across the world I am getting the right product and my moneys worth. Any criticism, advice and feedback given will be greatly appreciated and i hope you guys can help me get the keyboard i want and need.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Check the WW Shopping Wiki stickied above under Canada.

Killing a moose in Skyrim reminded me of this article.

checked it. none of which in that list sell the cmstorm quickfire rapid RED or FILCO majestouch 2.
both of which are not sold in north american regions.
if you read my post you would see that.

They lost distributor rights in the US. I personally think that Leopolds are better than Filcos, anyone will at least agree that there in the same league in terms of quality.

No time to read long long long noob posts anymore.

Sorry.  Why JUST Saturday night I was at a party with Canadian friends comparing poutine places.  That is hard to find in the USA.
or you just cant read. some mod you are. the post clearly apologized in advance for noob questions.

I'd get a Rosewill myself if I was Canadian.

But the OP doesn't like me so I'll shut up now.
no i just don't like it when mods can't read and give half ass answers that don't help the thread topic.
seems like you don't like me. rather the vice.

i am a prick who came asking for help and advice? yeah....

No.  He's Canadian.  Sometimes there is a difference.
and that means??

it's obvious new members are not welcome here by the way some users and mods are acting.
i don't understand what the problem with me was i just wanted answers.
and i ordered from pchome just last night. thanks slueth. another member was nice enough to point me in the right direction.

Not to worry OP, fortunately ripster is not actually a Mod. Only a moderator of his subforum (essentially, a Submod). Sort of like a Subhuman.

To answer your question, I'd go with the Tenkeyless Leopold with reds from EK (they ship to Canadia).

Ah the classic "clueness n00b who needs our help DEMANDS RESPECT!" post. It's possible we covered your exact needs in the millions of other n00b posts asking for a recommendation, so perhaps you can understand ripster's "check the wiki" response.

So back on topic, if I had poutine from a truck in Toronto (outside the Sheraton, near the ice rink) would you say I had a good representation of it or was I ripped off?

thanks for your response. i went to your sig link and found that page very informative.
i think my for my workstation keyboard i may go for a cherry with blue switch layout and swap out the heavy use buttons with some blacks.
are the cherry and poker the only 2 companies that allow switch swapping?

DEMANDS RESPECT? where did i demand it? i'm pretty sure there are less then millions of threads that covered my EXACT needs. go ahead knock yourself out and count them for us. and no i don't understand his response since he never bothered to read the post. but i'll be waiting for you to show me where the exact millions of posts that shows me in the wiki where to buy a limited edition keyboard and a region based released keyboard in Canada. do that then that might actually get this thread back on topic.

ok 2 more questions.
are there any TKL designs with back lighting? or is this no mans land and i'll have to try to mod this on my own?
is it just me or are EK, Filco and Ducky the only companies making short wrist rests for TKL type keyboards?

I would say Cherry Corp and Poker are the only two widely-available boards with cherry switches that are easily swappable (because they are PCB-mounted). At least the only two that I know of at the moment.
