Keyboards are taking over! atleast me.
« on: Sun, 04 December 2011, 07:20:21 »
Oh god where to begin? I love to play starcraft 2, and i have decided i want to go as far as i can. so i started researching about top level players, and one thing led to another.
So i started researching pro computer gear. And i heard the term "Mechanical keyboard" for the first time, bla bla i was watching "RooTDestiny" stream and heard a wonderful click&clack sound that got
me all mesmerized. So i did research into diffrent kinds of mechanical keyboard, reading this forum alot and so on.

First purchase over a week ago: a Filco majestouch 2 brown mx tenkeyless, second purchase at end of week: Filco Majestouch 2 blue mx with nump.
I really love the switch from my g15v2 mebrane to this brown, but i also figured i love the sound feedback the blue mx gives, from watching various vids. So il soon have these to try out.

So ofcourse i have read about the diffrent mechanics behind black blue brown and red switches.

So back to gaming SC2, i heard some people say that blue aint god to double tap on, others swear that it dosent impact, so i decided to try it out for myself.
But in the waiting of my blue mx, i started look at the linear switches... just for things like "double tapping". I guess in the end of this i will own every mx switch.

Ive started to develop this kind of wierd obession/love for keyboards, ive discovered myself surfing this site and googleing diffrent boards/switches...

But mentally this is killing me, so much MONEY! I've already spent 450 usd in swedish krones with shipping and tax. And now i am obsessing about whats actually is the best switch besides own preferance
Thing is if im going to buy one linear switch, i am going to have to make absolutley sure, if i want red or black. And christmas is coming up :/

Thing is though, after having bought filco, i cant ever go to anything less, if i want i could buy the SS6gv2 limited with red here in sweden, but it feels like downgrading, though it would be alot cheaper for me.
Please someone smack me on the head...

How can keyboards, that i never ever before gave a flying F-word about, make me so obsessed?!, how do you learn to cope with yourself spending so much on keyboards.
And final: What is your favorite switch for RTS? "I've already seen this question here, but thought i might ask again, time changes and so does peoples prefrence :)"

Dr. Slueth is on the case. Verdict.. get more keyboards.. maybe cherry red.  Maybe a quickfire to lessen the blow.  Then if that doesn't do it for you maybe a topre.
You didn't even buy doubleshots or dye-sub keycaps.  Also, your keyboard isn't geekhack approved without a clickclack keycap.  You don't want those gnomes to get layed-off now do ya?

By buying only vintage boards from now on. They can be pretty cheap. I haven't gotten anywhere near that much I don't think and I have alot more than 2 or 3 boards. It'll also let ya try some stuff that isn't cherry.

I don't think I'd really stay all that brand specific anyway.

Another enthusiastic worshipper of the Keyboard God, with serious preaches from Filco missionary.

Welcome to the Geekhack keyboard church.

For SC2, since it is a RTS without much key tappings, brown and blue is excellent.

My preference is Cherry MX Browns for RTS's, but key layout is more important to me than the type of switch. If I had to pick a specific board, The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth Edition looks like the ideal keyboard for this purpose.
Daily Driver: Leopold FC500R (Cherry Red)
Other Keyboards: Apple Extended Keyboard II (ALPS), Kinesis Contoured Essential (MX Brown), Keytronic LT Designer (Dome)
Previously Owned Keyboards: IBM Model M Spacesaver (BS), Compaq MX 11800 (MX Brown), TECHcessories Dinokidz (ALPS), Apple Aluminium Keyboard (Scissor)
Wishlist: Ducky (MX Black), IBM M13 (BS), Cherry G80-8200 (MX Clear), KBT Pure (MX Blue), Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth Edition (MX Brown)

You're okay for now. You haven't spent over $500 for a keyboard yet.

Without much key tappings ? really? have you ever watched SC2 ....

I have the Steelseries 6gv2 for 2 weeks , it has the linear MX-black , and i got to say that is much better than a rubber keyboard that its not even funny, i raised my APM from 50 to 60 ! ( im a casual player )
I tried MX-blue on the Razer blackwidow and it felt good too , but its really a matter of preference...

I have no doubt that all the switches are nice , but you should try before buying ... (you can try the red and black on sweden in the corsair gaming keyboard and the SS 6gv2 , that should be available there too )

I seem to be falling into that category myself :/  Sucks that I have 11 computers in my house (well it gives me an excuse to buy more boards, but I really don't need excuses at this point).  GeekHack will do that to you!

i think this is my first post. i keep hearing about blues being not a good option because of doubletapping. ask this guy what he thinks about it:

youtube.com/watch?v=pNALgHBFvWs

i've been into blues for a long time now, i wish i had them (at least the softer springs). still playing osu on my clears.

I started off with blues.. tbh, i never had double tapping issue with them, they felt great for starcraft.
I moved on to MX reds, I kinda liked the idea, thought i might like them and when I saw the white/gray Leopolds I decided I want one.
I personally loved the MX Blues sound but everyone around me hated it, because of the high pitch.

Now my new favorite switch is MX Red - I do love the lightness and smoothness, but the main thing that i really love is how bouncy it is - when you release the key they spring back into position straight away. The tactile point of Blues was slowing them down a bit. And I like the springiness. This is how I convinced myself to not buy a topre board - People mentioned that while they have their advantages, they arent as springy as Cherry MX.

Anyways, MX Reds ftw :P Gotta try Browns some time just cause I am curious ^^

I like the cherry reds a lot too.  Currently my favorite switch.  Just try to sell your keyboards as you aquire new ones so you don't look like a fool storing keyboards in every nook and cranny.(me)

I think Geekhack should provide free financial control consultation for individuals.

Otherwise, more and more people would stay broke with only a geekhack nickname and a lot of keyboards.

Actually in the game known as Starcraft 2, you double tap your control group keys (1 - 0) to go select a control group and move the camera to the control group location. Thats lots of double tapping ^^
If you havent explored the magic of control groups, you should, they are awesome.

yes , i can see now that he doesnt even know what starcraft 2 is... because he means double tappings...

please see this Toni ...

This is a normal guy playing starcraft 2 , and doing 300 ACTIONS PER MINUTE ... not words , actions..... they do 3 or 4 action per second with the keyboard and mouse so....

Also , Starcraft2 besides being the best game of all time , is also the game that requires the most skill and time to play at a high level , its not even close to other games ... I mean like 2 years of playing 12 hours a day , and even so , you will suck against Koreans , because they play when they are sleeping too , and you dont..

Hey, there is no need to criticize Tony for that stuff.

Lets summarize it this way - SC2 is an awesome twitchy game where you get to press a lot of buttons fast.
I like this 20 second video - thats a weird hand movement ^^

Oh my.
Same boat as the OP here, a year ago I didn't know what a mechanical keyboard was... I am typing this from my third filco, a camo with blacks I got off ebay a couple of days ago. Next to me on my desk is a Realforce 86UB and a Poker.
However, I have spent almost enough on key caps to buy them all again.

the Realforce is the clincher, once you have owned one you'll never look back.

I'm in Australia and these are all pretty easy to come by (and for a good price) but I am looking to get a 55g Realforce and a HHK2 which cannot be had for love nor money, I will have to buy from EK. After that I think I am done

Nah, I firmly believe that DotA/DOTA 2 has a much higher learning curve to play at a high level. It definitely matches or exceeds that of SC2's in my opinion.

Looking at this thread, has anyone tried Blue, Brown, and Red with games like DotA/DOTA 2 and HoN?

I have seen the video. Nada is not a normal guy. Most gamer cannot get half his APM, and even Nada is not tapping one key all the time.

FPS gamers tap WASD much more often than RTS gamers, which quickly switch from key to key.

I think SC2 is the better game :P Its just too awesome to not be the best game in the world. Also its a lot nicer to observe, but thats just an added bonus.
I personally find it more challenging to try to control many units(micro) + structures(macro) than to control one character which has to farm gold at the start and then you buy items for, and then you micro... one single guy which has like ... 5 abilities. Also things like critical strikes ruin it for me - while they are fun, they are too much of a random element.

Even though i am not a great player for those reasons I find it easier to admire an exceptionally good SC2 player over an exceptionally good Dota player.

I have tried both Reds and Blues for Dota. The advantage of Blues is that they sound great and drive people on Teamspeak insane xD. I prefer Reds though, because its my new favorite switch. I enjoy the lightness, the bounciness and the linear feel they have.
