I just purchased my first mechanical keyboard.
« on: Thu, 29 December 2011, 06:45:21 »
As the title says, I've just purchased my first mechanical keyboard, and I was wondering what "The Experts" thought about my purchase.

I bought a Leopold FC500R with Cherry MX Brown switches, I chose the browns because I do a reasonable amount of typing and gaming, I wanted to be in the middle of the two.

It was $109 AUD, I was thinking it might be worth my while to get some o-rings, do they affect the feel?

I'm kind of just posting this to help take my buyers remorse away, as this is the most I've ever spent on a keyboard, or mouse.

How are the brown switches? I could still change my order to red switches in the FC500R, or Black, Clear, and blue in the FC200R, although I would prefer having a number pad.

Are there any accessories you would recommend me to buy, E.G o-rings, keycaps, or anything else that would make my keyboard better?

Thanks, Pix.

I suggest you change to RED first as eventually you will be getting blue/brown from other brands, especially FILCO(while FILCO currently don't have RED for sale.)

If you get a brown Leopold, there is less brand you can look forward for red(Rosewill/Ducky/Corsair(sort of) only ATM).

Also, Leopold red switch cost the same, unlike many other brand which sell RED at extra cost.

I chose the browns because I wanted the tactile bump, as it is called, and most people seem to go for browns/blues, from what I can tell.

In the first place I wanted to get the 500R with blues, but they went out of stock before I had the money to buy them.

What makes the reds better than brown switches? wouldn't the tactile bump be somewhat beneficial, especially for typing?

Thank you for your input.

RED is also quite a heat for the time being due to 2 possible reasons:
1. It is a relatively new(around 1-2 years) switch and is rare to be seen in most brands(except china brands).
2. It is light and compounded with the linearity giving among the best feeling you can ever feel AKA - Typing on Cloud of Boobs

With the rising of RED, there also rise of people hating brown. People start to complain about the hardly felt tactility of Brown after the rising of RED, not sure why.

P/S: My comment isn't promoting red or opposing brown. Choose/Bet it yourself and don't blame me if you ever made a wrong decision(though there isn't really a WRONG DECISION in this forum, where most ppl continue to buy more and more boards...)

I'll see if it's not to late to change my order.

If you don't mind me asking, what switches/keyboards do you own/use?

Brown and Blue(and red soon).
Tried black too and also like it, even the weight too.

However, I hate brown for the "barely felt" tactility and blue for the "double action mechanism".

That's why I met my 3rd bet on RED.

You can;t really use other people's testimonials to base your first buy n. The switch preference is very personal.

Thats why I recommend him RED now. He will eventually try out brown/blue if he don't like RED.

If he take Brown now, it will be harder to find RED board if he dislike brown.

So try brown and if I don't like them, get something else later, because they'll be better than my $20 Logitech no matter what?

should I bother with things like o-rings and different keycaps?

edit*

For some reason I feel like I won't like reds as much as I will the browns, But I have no idea what I'm saying.

Mechanical keyboard is a step by step process. Get those things only when the poison level reached. Don't worry about them now.
BTW, if you decided to go for Brown, I guess it will be alright too. Most ppl whom 1st touched brown are ok/happy with them(except me, LOL...) until they touched RED/BLUE.

I am among the rare type which hate brown and blue the very first moment I land my hand down on them....

Thanks for the help, I hope I like the browns, I don't think it's gonna get here until Monday or Tuesday.

It seems like such long wait.

You will probably end up trying out multiple boards and there is no way to tell for certain what you will like and not based off of description alone.  Each switch and board must be experienced.  For example, everything I read and saw through videos and sound clips said to me that I would just not enjoy Blue switches.  Well, I got a Ducky MX Blue board for Christmas and lo and behold I love typing on blue switches much to my surprise!  Also with the differences in the boards themselves, not just the switches.  The Cherry stabilizers don't bother me as much as some people, but I definitely recognize a better feel with the Costar stabilizers for sure.
