Good Day,

I'm shopping around for my very first mechanical keyboard, oh joy, oh rapture!

I've done a lot of reading to get up to speed. So far, I've decided I want cherry brown switches, the ones that require the least pressure to press (Along with red switches, but the reds are linear and I don't want linear) and have the tactile feedback.

I never use the keypad, so I'll get a keyboard without the extra keys.

Right now, I'm looking at the Ducky model DK1087-BELLB, in basic black. That's $80 plus shipping at Tank Guys. It has ABS keycaps.

And there's the Leopold model FC200RT/AW in white for $109; that one is at Elite Keyboards. The description doesn’t say what kind of keycaps it has.

And the website was whinging that I had too many links in this missive, so I deleted them. Otherwise you could just click to see the keyboards I'm looking at.

Questions, Questions!

So, is the Leopold a better keyboard than the Ducky? I type for at least 3 hours a day. I'm transcribing a stack of paper notebooks and I want to speed it up. And make it less tedious! If a keyboard is more enjoyable to type on, I'd be more likely to keep typing instead of taking a break. I’m also studying paleo-anthropology and the stone age diet, fat metabolism, insulin sensitivity and I type copious notes.

I only play video games once in a blue moon. I did play Call of Duty 2 all the way through. It was fun to climb to the top of the silo and snipe the Germans from on high. I decided to do well at that game, you have to let go of the idea that a German only needs to be killed once! Throw a smoke grenade, three hand grenades, strafe them with machine gun fire, more hand grenades, that's the way to do it. But it's a video game, not something that deserves a lot of emphasis. As far as games, I mostly play chess. During breaks, I go for walks and watch a lot of documentaries, especially ones about evolution and human ancestors.

I also like that the Leopold is white; almost every other keyboard is basic black. I’m pondering if it’s worth the extra money. I remember my Mandarin Chinese teacher, Professor Mindy Zhang. She said it was very strange that so many Americans buy things without paying attention to the color. She said to my class, "How can you buy something and not care about the color? Color is very important to Chinese people!" I quite agree.

Mostly I’m wondering if the quality of these two keyboards is similar. What do you think?

Thank you for your suggestions. Happy New Year, Anthony
