need a mouse! pref. big heavy cordless.
« on: Wed, 19 October 2011, 18:03:39 »
anyone here do CAD work?  what do you use for a mouse?  I strongly prefer cordless.  please help because my favorite mouse just died completely.  It's a Logitech cordless; I can't find any kind of model identification on it anywhere, but it's a basic cordless, two button with scroll wheel.  The scroll wheel has a push down center button function and also if you push it side to side it scrolls side to side.  That's about all I know about it.  I'd really prefer something larger and heavier to fit my big mechanic's mitts but other than that the one that is now dead as a doornail was darn near perfect.  Now I'm using some crappy corded Dell OEM thing that came out of the IT guy's junk box and it's making me all stabby.  Unfortunately I don't have any stores nearby that have anything a) tempting or b) available to try in store.  It's frustrating now that I have a completely flat out awesome keyboard (and a Leopold with clears coming just in case it dies on me) and now I'm stuck using a $2 mouse :/

Post a picture of your Logitech. Someone will be able to identify it.

here you go.  My only complaints with it are that it is too small, too light, and doesn't work anymore.

I apologize for the poor picture quality, it's so damn glossy that it's very hard to photograph.

I don't think I found it, but this is at least close. That's an elusive little bugger. What wireless technology is used? I couldn't make it out from the picture. Also, if you're looking for a replacement, maybe take a look at the MX Revolution or its modern equivalent? Those are larger, nicer mice in my opinion.

I'm using a Logitech MX Performance right now, good wireless mouse and it's quite big, should be big enough for you. But unless you get it on sale it's quite expensive and drains batteries quite fast (But you just need to plug the mouse into your PC or the provided adapter and it'll charge the batteries while your using it).

P.S. It's main feature that it uses to justify it's price is that the sensor works on almost anything. A normal desk, wierdly coloured areas, glass, lexan, pretty much anything thats not mirrored. Not sure if that would be useful for you though.

I don't do CAD, but you won't find anything much heavier than the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 (and that's without the extra weights).  Not cheap though.  I just picked up the R.A.T. 7 Albino (wired) mouse, and I like it, especially after adjusting the size to fit my hand.

It's not Bluetooth, nor do I particularly want same - I'm not sure if my work computer supports it.  The one I have uses a dongle that plugs into a USB port, and it isn't the newer style tiny ones either (I had one of those but I thought the mouse was a weird shape and it wasn't any larger than the one pictured.)

Thanks for the recommends, I think I probably will end up going with the RAT - it's a shame you have to spend so much money to get a decent mouse, but whaddayagonnado.  Now I just have to decide if I want wireless or not - 4 days battery life doesn't sound very practical.  any comments on the "limpness" of the cord of the wired RAT?

OK, I just ordered a Performance Mouse MX (refurb) and a RAT7... we'll see which I like better.  One or the other will probably be for sale soon 'cause I can't keep blowing money like this.  I hope I don't like the RAT better because I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on a RAT9.

My friend who does CAD has a RAT7, he actually loves it, but one of the reasons is it's quite small and light which is how he likes it.

I've been using a Logitech Performance MX for over a year now and I absolutely love this mouse. It has a great weight to it, where it feels significant and "heavy", but isn't really all that weighty. It's also very accurate, and the battery lasts me about 5 days before it needs a recharge (depending on use). I also love the way it contours on the side, so my hand never feels uncomfortable or "scrunched" up. It's very comfortable.

I don't think you'll be disappointed by it, but it depends on your hands too.

thanks guys, hopefully one or the other will turn out to be the "perfect mouse."  I actually had extras of the old cordless that I liked, because I found them on closeout somewhere... but I only have one left that I'm using at home; the one at work died, and the third I gave to one of our admins because they set her up with a mouse with a BALL...?!?!?!?  seriously?

A trackball or a mechanical mouse(rollerball)?

Considering the higher resolutions we use and the slowness of the older sensor ignoring those factors the old rollerball mice aren't so bad. My guess is she likes the feel of it compared to current mice. In a more of a gamer mentality the few who used ball mice for extended periods of time have commented the tactile feedback of them and the feel of the rolling to aim and whatnot plus the zero lift-off distance. So maybe she likes the feedback and the center of balance weight those mice tend to have, I remember some of those mice having an extremely light body but the ball would feel much more dense and gave this sensation of feedback.

No, I mean a mechanical mouse with a ball - a museum artifact. She hated it.  And as someone who was doing CAD/design work all day every day back at the end of the ball-mouse era, I can tell you that I hated them too (seemed like a once a week maintenance thing to pop the ball out, clean it with dish soap in the washroom, and scrape all the gunge off the rollers with my fingernail to get the damn thing to track right again) and was never so happy as when laser mice were introduced.  In my mind that was an even greater advancement than cordless mice, and yet again I was ecstatic when cordless that actually worked well were introduced, because cord drag and/or snagging on my coffee cup drove me bat****.

Thanks for reminding me of how bad I used to have it and how good things are now :)

N8N, have you looked at trackballs? My old CAD teacher used one exclusively for 30+ years and can't imagine using a regular mouse for such applications - and I hear that kind of sentiment all the time from CAD guys on the internet... Might be a good thing to look into. Expect the good ones to be just as pricey as good mice though (60-100 bucks)

I've never had the opportunity to try one, nor do I really have any B&M stores that carry same (same is true for good mice apparently) I'll give it some thought if I'm not happy with either of the mice I just ordered...

Seems like the designers at my current job just use whatever mouse comes with their PC which blows my mind.  I can't even stand to do that and I'm not a designer anymore...

Aaaaagh!  I just got the second of the two mice I ordered...  so now I have both a RAT7 and a Performance Mouse MX...

the PMMX doesn't have the side-side function for the scroll wheel that my old cheap Logitech cordless did?

And the thumb scroll on the RAT7 can't be configured to do side scrolling?

BAH!

But, of the two, so far I prefer the feel of the RAT in my hand.  Pinky shelf = win.  I've had it for only a couple days and I'm already spoiled.  I hope that the quality concerns raised about the RAT don't rear their ugly heads.  I must have got a recent one though, because I'm not seeing the lift-off cursor movement problems that others have experienced, although I have had it hang on me for a second or so after lifting and repositioning - not a big deal for use as a work mouse, but if I were a gamer I'd still be piss0red.  Also, the thumb rest and pinky shelf both have glides on them which I've seen mentioned as complaints online, so maybe Mad Catz is listening to customers.

I've only had the PMMX for a few minutes and it seems to be a valid option and had I not tried the RAT I'd be OK with it.

I miss my side scroll though!  Waaaaah!  I didn't even ask, I just ASSumed that anything Logitech would have it.  (also what's the deal with the non-notchy setting on the scroll wheel of the PMMX?  seems like a useless feature to me and just something to break.)

Way old thread, but thought I'd add my 2 cents.  PMMX does in fact have horizontal scrolling via the mouse wheel (L/R), but there's no tactile indication that you've activated it, which always seemed like an oversight to me.  Plus, it seems to require an inordinate amount of force to get it to trigger.  Definitely one of the few design flaws that I've found on this mouse.

The non notchy scroll wheel is for the instances where the scroll bar is far too inaccurate to use but you need to scroll down alot. (Think a 400 page PDF and what you want is 10 pages away, too close to use the scroll bar so you need to scroll, and scroll alot really fast.)

One thing I don't like about the PMMX is the battery life, I'm recharging it all the time, even when using new batteries.

Well, the RAT is dead.  That took less than two months!  What ****e.  The laser apparently died at some point while I was out of the office today; it was working this morning but now it's not.  I took it home and it's not working on my personal laptop either.  Dammit, Janet!  I just want a mouse that is comfortable and doesn't die on me.  I guess I'm taking the PMMX to work tomorrow and looking for another mouse for permanent work duty.

I've done quite a bit of drafting throughout my degree, and I've been extremely happy with both my Xai and DeathAdder. I have a Xai at my home computer, which I used a lot while I was at uni to do drafting for assignments, and a DeathAdder with my laptop that I used while I was doing vacation work. Now I'm a fully qualified engineer, I don't do so much drafting, but I still use the DeathAdder at my work PC whenever I do need it. Both the DeathAdder and the Xai are extremely comfortable to use - plus I've got one of those giant SteelSeries mouse mats, which helps. I know you said you'd prefer cordless, but I figured I'd offer my thoughts anyway.

Slightly off-topic, but it seems very strange to me that so many people swear by trackballs. They just seem to be clumsy to me, although I've never tried a *proper* one. I move around my desk a lot, because I'm constantly switching between working on A3 printouts of specific sections of a structure and then having to clear my whole desk to work on A1, so I think a trackball might be a pain. I might check one out at my home computer just for fun, though.

As an older Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 fan, (went through about 3 or 4 of them?) Followed by a logitech 500, I have now had the death adder (blue 3.5g v) and swear by it.
The sensor has never skipped a beat, and tracks soo freaking accurately.
It was also the first right handed model (that i know of) from Razer.
I can play games (fps or rts) all day on it and have zero pain unlike using the other mice, or the crappy OEM mice you get @ work.

My only issue with this bad ass mouse, is the fact I use it too much (3-4 years of solid mousing?) and where I thought I was dragging my pinky in a game of bf3, it was actually the right foot had worn flat on one edge, and as such had started to peel back. :( as it turns out, I can buy replacement feet from razer. so that's cool, ill be doing that soon! Because having one of the feet off, is driving me nuts!

Sorry to hear about the RAT as well :/ was hoping your story might have ended up differently.

And I too haven't laid my hand(s) on a trackball since well before the turn of the century, so I can't really comment either. Might take some getting used to, but, could be good.

On the other hand, just get a death adder :D

I also was looking for a big wireless mouse recently as my hand was really starting to ache. I was given a best buy card for $50 and decided to find out what I could get. Long story short I bought a Logitech marathon mouse. For my purposes it is great and I love it. The scroll wheel sold me as it has no resistance and spins like a ball bearing. Also it was $50 so I just had to pay the tax.

I second this. Lots of programmable buttons for modifiers and shortcut keys. It's actually better for work than for gaming, IMHO. It doesn't feel quite as nice as the Performance MX or the Anywhere MX though.

There's also a little-known Bluetooth version of the MX Revolution, in the MX5500 keyboard/mouse combo.

I dont mine swapping that batteries out every 3-5 days or so because their rechargeable.
