Ducky 1087XM w/ green alps First Impressions
« on: Wed, 21 December 2011, 18:45:30 »
Hello guys! I just received this keyboard from TigerImports. Fast shipping for me since I just next door in Alabama!
I just wanted to give some of my initial impressions of this keyboard.

Pros:
- Embedded Numpad
- Tenkeyless
- Removable USB cable
- Nice Keycaps
- White Alps under Scroll Lock and Caps Lock (I really like the different feel)

Cons:
- Shoddy build quality (Doesn't feel quite as sturdy as my Leopolds or Rosewills)
- Keyboard feet are a pain to get stand up
- MicroUSB connector on keyboard isn't perfectly aligned (yuck)

Any questions, Feel free to ask!

Deuces

Wow.  I didn't know Noodles could do complete sentences

Neither did I...

I did have my eye on this with the cheap PCHome shipping deal. I then decided I had a problem I needed to see a shrink about.

After that I decided that I promptly bought a HHKB Pro 2 and a Realforce 23UB.

My summary.

Ducky kinda sucky, but not ****y.

i have my moments

@dante - yes I enjoy typing on it. Its like the click of cherry blues except not as harsh sounding.

one last thing --- pretty easy to take the keycaps off on this?

this is actually a good question. These caps are so hard to take off. I am worried about breaking the board when i pull them offf...

Same thing with my minitouch. I'm always scared of pulling its keycaps because it feels like I'm going to rip the whole switch off.

Argh, am I on Deskthority or something? Where's the nickels? I can't believe nobody brought up rip-o-metering this yet. Can you please measure a few keys including modifiers and the spacebar, I'm interested to see how the actuation force compares to blues.

some vibration, like knocking the table will "break" the tactility without affecting the spring measurement ... I think that's what ripster means by dithering.

I'm not the keyboard Oracle, but I'm pretty sure he means the LED color.

I'm not the keyboard Oracle, but I suspect he is probably asking about the LED color.

Yeah, the caps and scroll lock are very much linear. The only feedback you get is the feel of grit.

Got mine yesterday.  All in all I'm happy for the money it cost.  Yes the keys wobble a bit and yes the case won't sit flat on my desk.  But I like the feel of the green Alps, and their ridiculous noise.  Linear Caps Lock and Num Lock is puzzling, and actually pretty annoying since I have Caps remapped to something that I use constantly.  Nevertheless it's a fun board to have around for when I'm feeling like being loud.

One puzzling thing is that when I plug it into my Windows machine via a USB extension cable, I see its lights flash and hear the telltale "byeow byeow" that tells me Windows has found new hardware, but typing produces no output.  If I plug it into a USB port directly, all is well.  The keyboard works fine through an extension cable on my Linux machine at work, and it even works fine on my machine at home before Windows loads (e.g., changing BIOS settings and using my boot menu).

Any ideas?

I presume you tried turning it off and then on again? I would try going to the device manager, uninstalling the default windows drivers for the USB controller, reboot, and let them reinstall. If that doesn't work, try installing the drivers given by your motherboard manufacturer.

no ideas but I would be very curious to hear your opinion on whether you feel the XM Green or Cherry Blue are louder.

I would definitely go with the XM Green.  Pressing keys one at a time, it's hard to say which is louder.  But typing at full speed there's no question.  The Ducky is a clickety-clackety beast (which I love).

FYI- The keys bottum out at 50g, exactly the same as blue cherry and has the tactile click of blue cherry.

I have it, and its ok, Im thinking of replacing it actually with a Filco Majestouch2 as Im curious how it does against cherry blue, my only other mechanical keyboard was a Dell AT101 and its a big upgrade on that, the keys feel a little wobbly and the space bar is not even and the keys feel a little too slick (McRip effect?). Wondering how it is for people that have other keyboards and this also as this was my 2nd mechanical.

If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.
