What is the R1 key?
« on: Mon, 06 February 2012, 11:22:34 »
I'm buying key caps for a friends birthday present and I wanted to add in the ctrl alt and shift keys but on wasd keyboard it asks if I want to switch the shift sizes. It says Change Shift Sizes

        Switch R1 1x2.25 to R1 1x1.25
        Switch R1 1x2.75 to R1 1x1.75

Does anyone know what this means? I'm really confused. Any help is appreciated.

In WASD terminology, row 1 (R1) is the row that contains the shift keys and ZXCVBNM. On a typical ANSI layout, the left shift key is 2.25 units wide (that is, 2.25 times the width of a normal key) and the right shift is 2.75 units wide. On most euro layouts, the left shift key is made smaller (1.25 units) to allow an extra key between SHIFT and Z. This is because euros have extraordinarily long pinky fingers as a result of tying heavy weights to them at birth. On some layous, the right shift key is also shrunk to 1.75 units to allow an additional key between / and SHIFT.

As kps explained, in WASD, the counting starts at the bottom (ctrl row and shift-zxcv rows are considered row 1, capslock row as row 2, tab row as row 3, and tilde/esc rows as row 4). Be careful, though, because in other systems the counting starts from the top (esc/tilde row are considered row 1, tab row as 2, capslock row as 3, and the bottom two rows as row 4). The terminology for modifier (shift, ctrl, alt, etc) key sizes should be the same, as far as I know.

Thank you guys for all the explanations. I have ordered the correct caps and sizes correctly and couldn't have done it without you guys. Thanks so much! :D funny story about the European pinkies too made me chuckle.

its true I can almost reach the left arrow key without removing the rest of my fingers from the home row ( and that's only with 5 nickels tied to them if i had gone for 8 i could have reached the up and down arow keys :-) ) , its all part of following ISO standards you know like the rest of the world do :P
