Is it possible to make SHALLOW tactile+scissor switched KBs?
« on: Fri, 02 March 2012, 19:39:36 »
Maybe my title wasn't the best, but I'm wondering if such a thing exists as this: a keyboard which uses shallow scissor-based keys, as on the current Apple keyboards, but with clicky, tactile metallic switch keys such as the Cherry MX Blues, with a shallow concave surface (pardon my lack of knowledge regarding the exact term for that concave thing).

I'm very much new to this, Mr N00B here

The "shallow concave surface" is called InCurve by Logitech. Many of their chiclet-style keyboards use that profile.

As for tactile clicky keys that have that low of a travel distance, I can't think of any. Welcome to Geekhack by the way .

Thank you for the welcome. No, I wasn't referring to concave on shallow keys, or any brand name for it. I was referring to the general term used to denote the concave surface of keycaps.

Scissor-switch isn't clicky.

The best bet probably is to get a Cherry G80-3800 and modify the switch on it into Cherry Blue.

You're missing my point. I'm talking of a scissor stabilising mechanism, without the rubber dome under it. There would be a metallic switch incorporated into it... a hybrid.

I'll design one, wait and see if I don't. :)

Too little space under the scissor mechanism structure to fit a mechanical switch. You could, but it would be something along the line of micro switches used in mice. Cherry's got a mechanical low profile switch. Can't remember what it is called... or i could be talking crazy. Whatever it is, it is not very well received.

EDIT: o thats right, its the cherry ML switch.

You don't know what thoughts are in my mind, and what possible designs I may have dreamed up ;)
