Question about keyboards
« on: Mon, 05 March 2012, 20:01:50 »
Hello, geekhack!

I'm a full time student, and will be for another 5ish years (doctorate programs :c). I also play FPS games competitively and play them for some side money.

Anyway, my old Logitech Illuminated keyboard just broke, and I need help deciding between two keyboards : the Corsair Vengeance K60, and the Razer Black Widow. No, I do not want Cherry MX Browns - they feel weird for me.

I know that the Corsair is mechanical except for the F keys, and the delete/end/home/etc. keys. That does not matter. (not to sound rude)

Is there anything I should know about each of these keyboards (problem wise)? Is the space/right alt key problem on the BlackWidow still a problem?

How about the feeling (although I know this is preference)?

Also, any keyboards that you recommend that would be good for a student/gamer? Switch type? I've never owned a mechanical keyboard before so I would really appreciate some help on this. MX Reds just seemed like the natural choice for me, but I'm not sure how they feel in comparison to my old keyboard. The other option(s) would probably be Blacks or Blues.

I was previously looking at the CM Storm Quickfire with MX Reds, but tenkeyless really kills it for me.
Thanks in advance, and I'll be happy to answer any questions if necessary!

If you have money then don't go for the blackwidow. Take a chance with the corsair.... but those are mxreds... pretty closer to the mxbrowns which you mentioned feels weird for you. I do believe the mxreds are good for FPS though -- but that's personal preference bro.

So if you have the cash... again take a chance with a different keyboard than the blackwidow. There are just too many unhappy customers who are not pleased with its stabilizers and plastic and keycaps and the overall solidity of that keyboard to say that there really isn't a problem.

Why won't you like TKL keyboards? -- not unless you use the numpad.

I use the numpad a lot with how my controls are set up when I play games.

I'm sure I could adapt, but I think it'd be difficult seeing as I've been gaming like this (arrow keys for movement, 1 2 3 for weapons on numpad, etc.) for a good 8-9 years.

My advice... Get either a Filco, Leopold or Rosewill full size with Reds, maybe Blacks if the Reds feel too light for gaming.  I don't play games at all so I can't advise you there.

How heavy are blacks in comparison to reds? I'm willing to get any keyboard, its just the K60 and BlackWidow caught my eye.

Also, how is the CM Quickfire with MX Reds? I'm assuming you have one since it's in your signature.

This would be my advice as well.  I would recommend trying MX Black as well.  I play games a lot, and I would say Browns and Blues are good for gaming, as the tactile bump is really great for FPS games.  But everybody has their own opinion.  Reds and Blacks are good too.

What are the differences between Filcos, Leopolds, and Rosewills?

I read that Rosewills are essentially repackaged/rebranded Filcos (or maybe it was the other way around), but I have no clue.

I recall someone opened it up and found Filco branded parts.

As for the Blackwidow, I don't think it's the best but I don't think it's the worst either. Plus you can sometimes find it for like $59 - $70 on sale so you can't complain for that price. But I've heard many horror stories about them and I must have just been lucky when I got mine.

+1 one recommendation on Rosewill for your first board. Decent price, good build quality and your choice of switch makes it an easy recommendation. You don't want a tenkeyless or otherwise I would have recommended the CM Storm for the same reasons.
Either way there are so many better choice than the Corsair and especially the Black Widow in their price tiers.

Is there a huge difference between reds and blacks?

I'd be willing to give browns a try again, it's just my friend had VERY nasty, weird feeling keys on his keyboard.
