Hello everyone, I have a quick question. I'll be using Paypal to do my first sale and was wondering if it's free. Also, how do transactions between geekhack members usually occur? Thanks.

It is not free.

You can either send invoices

Or buyers can send payment as gift which is a free service, but offers no support for buyers

I suggest you carefully read about the services offered and the associated fees before using paypal

Gotcha. Guess I'll be doing the invoice. Thanks for your help. I know about the 2.9% +$.30 charge they do for each payment received. Was just wondering if there was a way to get around it. Like the paypal to paypal money transactions they do for free.

Be careful if your paypal is new. Also a certain someone's account got frozen sending invoices when not having the items to sell.

The reason I heard behind that account lock is that he didn't mark the invoices as shipped within a certain period as required by PP.

if you are honestly worried about a 3% fee, then just list your item for a slightly higher price than you originally planned on doing.

My paypal account got frozen atleast 5 times in the past year. W're talking about a paypal account with a bank account associated with it.

Dont fear that, a phone call ALMOST always solves stuff within 20 minutes. (I've had 2 hours talks)
=> This is only if you are willing to provide ID. Oh and I hope you want to, otherwise they will keep your money forever. They steal a whole lot of prepaid credit cards money like this. Childs trying to use paypal with the prepaids they got for christmas.

You can buy in confidence with paypal, but you can't sell. Paypal is the worst selling tool ever.

I used to have a buisness where I sold virtual goods. Money in games. I had to calculate a 30% loss due to paypal disputes. There is no way to win a dispute, ever.

Let me tell you how easy it is, even when you send money as gift. I am so confident about this that I tried buying a CS:GO beta key the other day from a known scammer.

1. Send the money to the seller, as gift.
2. Seller logs out of skype and blocks me, yay! I don't give a **** :)
3. Open a dispute with unauthorised transaction. Didn't even have to wait, paypal dosen't give a ****.
4. Paypal does a small investigation, they conclude that I was hacked, and refund me.

Yeah, off couse I was hacked. I opened a dispute 5 minutes after the transaction, from the same IP and from the same session used to do the transaction. What could they possibly investigate if all of the possible information shows that I have NOT been hacked? Nothing. They cancel each and every disputed gift.

Not confident enough about this techniques? Do the transaction from another IP, some proxy in china or stuff. This freaks paypal so bad. They locked my account several times in a row for that. EVEN AFTER I explained them that I USE PROXYS TO BROWSE THE INTERNET.

What could the seller have done more to steal my money? Send me an actual package with tracking? Nah, This does not work either, because I have tried it.

Oh, also, there is another way to get your money back as a buyer: call your credit card provider. People do it all the time to scam, then ask for a new credit card number and repeat.

Conclusion: Paypal = Buyers/Scammers paradise.

Did I mention I love paypal?

Ebay/Paypal is outrageous.

For the last few months, they have been putting a hold on payments made to me of 3 weeks or so, (of course, if I make a payment, the money is sucked out of my account in a nanosecond!), sometimes even after the item has been received and the buyer left me positive feedback on ebay.

This particular account is about 4 years old, I have over a hundred transactions with 100% positive feedback.

I have had 2 other accounts with ebay/paypal over the course of more than a decade, with probably something in the neighborhood of a thousand transactions altogether, roughly equal numbers as buyer or seller, maybe a few more as seller, and have maintained a 100% positive rating in all cases.

I have had disputes, going either way, as buyer or seller, on perhaps 1%-2% of my transactions (however, none at all on this current account) which were almost universally decided against me, even though I was always in the right.

Why do I keep coming back? Because ebay is the only game in town.

I would prefer to not have to use the "gift" route, but it is the only way to keep them from locking me out for weeks on end.

Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

From my understanding of their terms the only way to get money out of amazon payments is to spend it at amazon... that doesn't work for me.

Ignore the other replies, as Paypal is a charity, and offer the service for free. Honest.
