Some weeks ago I obtained a Model M through my college, and I have been procrastinating on cleaning it thoroughly. I opened up the chassis this evening and upon removing the metal plate inside, I noticed several small rust spots and corrosion on the underside of the plate. I didn't want to just start scouring it with WD-40 or something like that, so I come seeking a bit of advice...

Has anyone else had experience with this, or does anyone know a good way to remove or repair the damaged spots? I have included some pictures [cell phone]:

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Those spots are not bad, you really don't need to worry unless you are just picky.

Are you doing a bolt-mod? If you are cutting the plate free you have the ability to do more harsh and complicated procedures on it.

If you just want to touch it up, I would use steel wool or light sandpaper to remove the rust.

"Naval Jelly" (not to be confused with navel jelly) is a great product if you really want to fix it good. It is a pink goop (made for ship repairs - surprise!) that neutralizes rust. Probably costs $10 for a small jar.

If you don't want to take the time and trouble, paint some Rust-o-leum paint on it (the oil-based type includes a rust killer) or just rub it with machine or gun oil that specifies "prevent rust" with a rag. Fingernail polish is probably OK, whenever the wife gets tired of a color I keep the leftover on the workbench for this sort of thing. That will probably hold it for quite a while as long as it stays dry inside the case.

If you are doing the bolt-mod, clean and buff the whole plate, and then paint, varnish, or oil-rub it to your heart's content. Try not to leave any excess.

There are many coatings and polishes for metal, but nobody ever sees that plate, except you, so spend your time elsewhere.

The early ones had a glossy finish that was different and prettier. Heavier plate, too.

Not doing any mods or anything, just want to prevent further rust and corrosion. Thanks for all the good info though! I will probably just use steel wool to get the rust off and maybe try the rust-o-leum. Not aware of any places around that would sell that naval jelly, any recommendations?

I have a jar of Naval Jelly that I have probably had for at least 20 years, I don't use it often. And when I do, it is a small amount. I'm sure that on a battleship they mop it out by the bucketful, but for me it has been spots like yours and a Q-tip.

I'm sure I bought it in a hardware store for maybe $5 for a half pint, 1980s prices. I bet even Home Depot or Wal-mart would have it, in the paint department.

If I remember, like the active ingredient in Rust-o-leum, it is some sort of fish by-product.
