Leopold black switch or Unicomp Classic?

Unicomp or Leopold black Cherry

I have been trying to decide what new keyboard to get.  I have narrowed it down to a Unicomp or Leopold.

First my situation:

I have never really used a mechanical keyboard much at all - I might have used an old IBM one once or twice in school but do not recall and I just tried a an Adesso blue switch for 5 minutes.  But I hate how mushy and empty  the current keyboards feel and I need a new keyboard, so I do not want a regular rubber dome one.

I am probably a heavy typist (and not a good one) and bottom pretty out ever key press. I tried a co-worker's Adesso keyboard with Blue Cherry switches today.  I liked it better than anything I have used (likely all rubber dome keyboards) but it seemed weaker than I thought it would  be. I would like a firmer feel that the blue switch.  Also, I could only sort of feel the click/trigger - not really sure. So I am not sure I would even like a trigger point in the switch.

Choices:

I am thinking if I go Leopold I should get the black switch, since I would like a firmer feel and not sure if I would even like the click the blues and browns do I could even tell  (again, I could not even feel the click on the blue switch Adesso.) But then I have read people describe black switches as being mushy, which is how I would describe all current keyboards and is the main reason that I do not like them. So maybe I would not like black switches.  A question to people who have used black switch keyboards, is mushy how you would describe teh feel of pressing keys on blackswitch keyboard?

I called ELitekeyboards today, and told the guy I thought the blues switches seemed weak and asked if I should get a black, and he did not really answer on the black instead but he said that from what I told him, I might like the Unicomp better.

My concern on the Unicomp is  two things.  1) that is only has 2 key roll-over - I play games every now and then on my keyboard so I am worried about that - although on the more complex games, MMO with many keys and macros, I use a game pad (G13 now and I am getting Nostromos). so maybe that should not matter.  And 2) based on some forums I have read, the fit and fitness of the Unciomp is suspect (plastic mold nipples left on keys, crocked keys and/or keys not flush with each other.)   Do Unicomp have low quality fit and finish issues?

My concerns on the Leopold are 2:  1) which switch to get and 2) being such a new board, will it be prone to bugs/snafus, whereas Unicomp's design has a 30+ year track record based on the IBM original, it seems it is less risky in that area.

Sorry for asking so much but I want to make sure I get a keyboard which will make me happy for many years.

If you get the Leopold get the clears over the blacks if you are using it for typing.  Or get the blues.  The unicomp is my favorite keyboard switch.  I do type heavy.   Keyboards are tanks.  I wish they came in a tenkey less form factor which is my favorite.

I was about to second the suggestion of a Leopold with clears, but then I checked and saw that Elitekeyboards no longer carries them. I'm pretty sure they were a limited time thing there from the start.

The MX blacks do *not* feel mushy like rubber domes. They will be very springy, but not as crisp as the other Cherry MX switches, due to the combination of the heavy spring and lack of a tactile actuation point.

I'm afraid I can't speak from experience on the quality of Unicomp in particular, but I can say that certain people on keyboard forums can be extremely nitpicky and will expect a 100% perfect keyboard. I think the only keyboards I haven't seen complaints about are the custom Korean keyboards, and it would probably require literally killing someone (a Korean) to get your hands on one of those. (Anyone else a little suspicious of Reaper's KMAC?)

Honestly, you will probably be happy with either board. They're both great options and will feel heavier than the blues you tried. I think buckling springs, like in the Unicomp, are more "fun" to type on, but keep in mind that the Unicomp case is huge and it will be impossible to type even remotely quietly on those keys.

Are the Ultra classics huge too?  Unicomp's site states:  The Ultra Classic is our BEST keyboard. It's built with the same buckling spring mechanisms, keybuttons, and steel baseplate as used on the Classic. The stair stepped keys, tactile "clicky" feel, and robust design are the same as well. It's Ultra because it uses a newly designed clamshell cover set reducing the footprint by 20% and eliminating almost ½ pound of plastic.

I haven't used one, but from what I have seen, they are still a bit larger than a Leopold, particularly if a tenkeyless Leopold is an option.
