What's the difference between white plate and black plate? Does it just depend on when it was made?

I believe so. My old 17 jan 1990 M had a beige barrel plate, and I noticed the plate in the bolt mod wiki article ripster made up was black. The plate on my black unicomp is also black.

The actual metal plate is, of course, grey. I think some of the older ones are a different colour.

the material is the same as far as i can tell. i think they just switched over at some point.
