Model M SSK Membrane
« on: Mon, 25 June 2012, 08:53:46 »
Does anyone have a spare membrane they'd be willing to part with for an SSK?

I have a slight tear in a plastic membrane towards the top where it connects to the controller. I may try to repair it by taping the membrane back together on one side then use some type of conductive material to fuse the line traces back together and then tape that section. Anyone try this before?

Thanks everyone

I don't have an SSK membrane, but I can sell you a regular IBM Model M membrane for cheap.  You can modify it to fit in a SSK, it won't have embedded numlock ability but otherwise it should work.

why dont you call Unicomp, I belive they still have parts for the SSK, internal that is. Otherwise they would not have an repair services for IBM Model M's.

unicomp does not have spare SSK membranes. you would have to cut a full-size membrane to size and then join the traces you cut with a conductive pen. if your membrane tear is not serious, your best bet is to just repair it. get a conductive pen and some tape (kapton or some other very stable tape is probably preferable) and just re-join the traces that are cut.

Yep checked with Unicomp first and they told me they don't stock SSK membranes. I have several sizes of Kapton tape so I'll be using that on the ribbon. Regarding the conductive pen, where would be the best place to pick those up? The tear is pretty clean so I don't think it will be too big of an issue to repair and I'd like to keep the numlock ability if possible.

any electronics supply place should have conductive pens. they're just pens that have an ink with silver particles in it. if you can't find one locally, an online surplus place like MCM is probably your best bet. here's one for 10 bucks

Thanks mkawa, that's what I needed. Does this stuff flex fine when dry?

yah, as long as the surface it dries on is flexible. hence, you want a very stable tape.
