Keyboard Reccomendation
« on: Sun, 12 August 2012, 13:35:01 »
I've been lurking here for a few days looking for some options to replace my old Z Board. I've done a lot of reading here and I'm looking to get some input on what I'm thinking. I'm about 95% set on Cherry MX Blues; use is about 75% typing (Papers, Coding, General Use) and 25% gaming (FPS, a little RTS). I've been looking at Filco, Ducky, WASD, Uncicomp, CM and Rosewell. I'd rather go for 104 Keys but I could be convinced to go for less. I don't care about back lighting. I'm actually contemplating going blank or engraved, I like the minimalistic design and could learn to type completely correctly.  I do like the side printing on the Filcos but they seem to be the only ones that have the whole board side printed. I did see some links to 37 key sets on the forums, but not much else. My old 680i has PS2 so I'll be running it through an adapter if it's USB, so I have no USB or PS2 preference. I've seen several boards with removable USB cables in the picture forums and I like that idea for longevity. I know the Rosewells have them and people are split on their build quality for that aspect. On price I could do up to about $150, but obviously I wouldn't mind cheaper so I can buy some custom keys. At this point I'm kinda leaning to the WASD keyboards, but I'd love to hear everyone's input.

If you're saying that you could be convinced to go tenkeyless, then I would strongly recommend going tenkeyless. The lack of the numpad lets you have your mouse in a much nicer position. And you can then have your keyboard centered in front of your monitor. It makes a big difference.

If you're looking for a TKL mx blue keyboard, the quickfire is the way to go. Low priced, high quality keyboard, and it'll allow you to get keycaps or whatever you like to spend your money on :D Filcos are nice, but not really worth their price premium over the quickfire imo.

And welcome to GH!

I've never had a TKL board, but I don't think I'd miss much so I'm definitely considering it more now. I feel like it'd set me up much better at my desk. And thanks for the Quick Fire recommendation. I saw them earlier and kind of dismissed them, but I pulled up some search results and found a pretty good consensus on them. Branding sucks, but keys will be gone quickly and I'll figure something out for the case. Now if I can get my hands on a Red Alert Key Cap set for a decent price...

you won't get red alert for a decent price.

the quickfire's branding isn't so bad if you replace the keycaps.

I meant not a crazy out of the universe price, I know they don't come cheap since they were just a group buy.

I love my 104's but I highly recommend an 87 TKL with an external num pad on the opposite side of the mouse. Look at filcos and leopolds for good TKL's.
