Looking for a new mouse, could use some ideas
« on: Tue, 30 July 2013, 05:38:01 »
I've been poking around for awhile. I've owned razer since my interest in PC gaming, and have always loved the look and feel of their products. I had blind faith. So I convinced myself that all of my terrible Razer experiences were flukes, and that their products were sound, I was just having bad luck, and that my fight with their customer service was singular.

Luckily, I've found GeekHack and Overclock.net and hence, hope.

So, I'm giving up my Razer Mamba, and brush the dirt from my sandals as I move on and never look back.
I like the feel of the Mamba, the way it feels in my hand. If anything, I'd almost like something very slightly larger, but definitely not smaller.
I'm looking at the SteelSeries Ikari, but am having trouble finding a good place to pick up the white variant, and I'm not sure I want to buy new anyways. Any suggestions on the sub- $100 range that has a similar feel to the Mamba? I'm not worried about being brand new technology, I'm more concerned about reliability. Tried and true products, good customer service. I don't have any serious experience with any other brands beside Razer, WASDKeyboards, and AudioTechnica, so feel free to lay out why you like a certain brand, or a certain product. Don't assume I already know why I should like it!

Thanks, guys.

Oh, and I'm a fan of weight. Give me a 15 pound mouse. For real.
I had a Sidewinder like a decade ago, and I filled it with all the weights. I can't stand light mice. Feel like I'm going to break them

Helps if you tell us what grip you use as well.

If you want heavy you might have to either mod weights in yourself or blow your budget, since the heaviest mice are usually the flagship ones. The R.A.T. 7 and 9 are fairly heavyweight even without the optional weights, but they use the PTE sensor, which is the same type of sensor used in your Mamba. Not the best choice if you want reliability.

The Logitech G700s is also very heavy, mostly due to the battery, and while it can be used wired if you don't like wireless I wouldn't recommend it since the cable is short, fat and stiff so if you're going to use a G700s wired you should redo the wire. The weight is also unevenly distributed, so it's mostly a hindrance.

If you have access to metalwork equipment you could do what someone else on the forum here has done already; get a Logitech G500 or G500s and replace the weight cartridge with a lump of metal.

Logitech should also be a better choice for reliability and customer service, I wouldn't trust Razer customer service to be of much help, but the 2012 and 2013 line of Razer mice have been pretty solid compared to the older mice.

The size thing is a bit iffy as you don't really get much larger than the Mamba, the IME 3.0 which it's based off might feel larger, but it also feels cheaply built and weighs very little, so again you'd have to do some heavy modding yourself.

That's all I've got off the top of my head right now, I'll add more later if I remember something else.

What happened with your mamba? I've used one as my daily at home for well over two years now it's never done me any harm. I love the thing. Only recently did I have an issue with it, bad profile flash, all I had to do was reflash it and it was golden again. Easily the best mouse I've ever used. I mean, it's getting a bit stale. After bringing in a new keyboard each month and then sticking to the same mouse for 2 years, I'm in the neighborhood for something as well.

Maybe some of the mice I was looking at can interest you. I was looking at the TT Level 10 M mouse. That looked pretty nice to me. Seemed to have a nice grip, made of a aluminum so it's beefy, and it's adjustable where it needs to be.

EDIT: Also, friend had a R.A.T 3 mouse that I tried out and I liked it. Just found out there's the R.A.T 9 which is a wireless version of the 7. Pretty expensive, but looks very promising.

Well, the first time around, my mouse starting becoming unresponsive at what seemed to be random times, either wired or wireless, and after several weeks of talking with Razer, they finally gave me an address to sent it in to, I got it back and had no problems, but about 6 months after getting it back, it started to act up again, becoming unresponsive, or moving in ways that I was not moving, clicking on things I wasn't clicking, but only wirelessly. I've been using it wired since, without any major issues, I'm just ready to move on from Razer, as this was the first of three products I've purchased from them, and I've not had a good experience with any of them.

At least I've got 104 cherry blues waiting for me to get some soldering equipment so I can practice taking apart a keyboard. But other than that, my BWU has no purpose any longer.

My issue is that I've been tainted by wireless mice. I hate wired mice now and that's why I'm in love with my Mamba still. Not to mention the wired / wireless functionality that no other wireless mice seem to have, it's inherently a great design. It's a shame a lot of people have problems with their products.

Both the Razer Ouroboros and the Logitech G700/G700s have the wired/wireless functionality, although as mentioned the G700 is fairly impractical due to the cable.

As for the initial problems you've had with the Mamba; I've experienced similar issues with mine where it would become unresponsive for a second, and then work normally again. As well as the usual PTE issues, like not tracking properly if it gets dusty, jumping around etc.

I did not know that. I'm actually looking into the G700 series mice now :)

I LOVE my G700.

But if someone wants a mouse with weight what about the G9X? Do they still make those?

I saw an article from last year about the G9X, not sure if it's still for sale though.

I think they don't make it anymore, but you can still get NIB one somewhere. For example, I'm selling mine because I don't like the wheel.

I know the G9x is discontinued in Europe, but I've heard that it's still available in the US.

Just bought mine NIB from Amazon. Pretty sure they're still being made.

I know this should be a part of my decision making process, here, but I feel like the G9x might be the ugliest mouse I've ever seen.
I've been looking into each mouse you guys have suggested, and the one that's caught my attention the most is the TT Level 10 M. Anyone have any first hand experience they'd like to share?

It's so ugly. Really. But it feels amazing when you hold it and for me that's the most important thing: how it feels in my hand.

That was my initial reaction as well when I first saw the G9x, but as time passed and I saw it again and again it grew on me and now I consider it one of the coolest looking mice out there. It's certainly one of the more unique mice. It looks better every time I look at it.

Then maybe my problem is that I don't have any way to try before I buy.

Also check out the Cooler Master Spawn and the Mionix Naos.  I was a big doubter of the Spawn until I tried Ming's and it made a convert out of me.  They nailed the shape so that it works for every kind of grip out there, it's cheap, and it has a great sensor.  The Naos is my current mouse and I love it, but may actually trade it in for the Spawn.

Oh, I forgot to answer, my grip.

Well, the only grip I know for term for is the claw grip (finger tip?) and that aint me. I like to get all up in my mouse's biz. Full palm that bad boy. Thumb on one side, pinky on the other, pointer and ring on the mouse buttons and middle finger on the mouse wheel.
I always assumed this was the standard grip, but now that the question is asked, I find myself less confident.

Actually, now that I'm paying attention to it, I cant the mouse to the left a bit, gripping with thumb and pinky. So the front of the mouse is left of the back end. I don't know if this is a thing, or if my muscle memory is broken, or even if I do this at home (I'm currently at work) but that's what feels natural right now.
