Something is wrong with one of my keys...any ideas?
« on: Sat, 01 September 2012, 20:54:11 »
I have a Ducky Shine that I got in December.  It's worked out amazing, blue switches, I love it to pieces.  Today, the spacebar turned into jello.  It has a green switch, and when I push it, it's less responsive and feels jellier than a membrane keyboard.  I took the key off, cleaned the area around it (not much to clean, just a bit dusty), and when I push the key directly, it just feels jelly.  No click, nothing.  Any ideas what it is/how to fix it?

Easiest way to fix it is remove the bad switch and replace it. If you are ok with soldering, it should only cost a couple dollars max for replacement switch. If you are not ok with solder, there are several around here that offered the repair service.

I can probably replace it, but I can't seem to find where to buy a replacement switch, and green switches seem even rarer. I might switch it with a blue or brown if possible.

De-solder it first and examine it, could be fixable. But it failed once, there is chance it would again. Greens are not easy to find right now you are right. I would just suggest a blue for replacement and have it uniform. You can get blue from wasd.

People make them this way, but I realized is not exactly the same, just a heavier blue. The grey spring would actually be what you want to use there for make identical to real green, or clear spring would be closer than black spring also.

The switch definitely sounds broken, and as you pointed out, Green MX is VERY hard to find.  You might consider finding one of the other 107 keys that you never or almost never use and rob one of the blue switches from underneath it. Not Green and Soldering still required, but no waiting for shipping / paying for another switch.  How old is the keyboard and did you buy it from Mechanicalkeyboards.com?  It might still be under warranty in which case I can just send you a new switch for free :) (don't think I have any Greens ATM but I can ask for some or send a blue if you're OK with that).

I checked my gray (brown) and my gray (black) and both the springs look different that my green spring. The only difference, however, is that my green springs are shinier.

I bought it from tigerimports :( Though I'm beginning to wish I had bought from mechanicalkeyboards.  I think I'm just gonna get a blue, or I'd like someone else to repair it ideally (I have 0 experience soldering things).
