Anyone have a Steelseries SX pad?
« on: Thu, 24 May 2012, 12:25:23 »
If so:

1. Can I buy it? $100 could be yours...

2. I'm jealous

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of these before it was discontinued, and absolutely adored it. Then I ruined it with an abrasive cleaning pad. I'm an idiot. The pad is now completely unavailable in the US--I have Googled this to death.

Ever since my loss I've been searching for a worthy replacement...I believe I've tried every top-quality pad on the market, and nothing matches the SX's sublime glide. I am perpetually unsatisfied.

Anyway, consider this an ode to perfection, and a lamentation of love lost. If you find one of these, first consider selling it to me...and if you're a gamer, grab it and never ever let go.

i don't know if we talked about it, but the icemat comes right behind the sx imo, but that's discountined as well, googlefu shoes no results for the sx neither amazon or ebay. As a side note, i did use the top surface of my lian li for a "stable" mouse pad and it was nice and aluminum, and felt great, but it's a big tower lian li, so it could reach mouse height.

Icemat's great. I've settled with a Steelseries I-2, which is essentially indistinguishable, but a tad bigger. Very "pure" glide, so long as you keep it clean.

I still need to try the Qpad CT and Zalman's aluminum pad, but I can't say I'm optimistic they'll compare.

I'm waiting on a Singapore retailer to let me know if they ship to the US...here's hoping it does...and that it makes the journey.

isn't there a razer aluminum as well? i mean idk mouse mat's these days, isn't the steelseries sx a bit different cuz of that oily cloth and porous aluminum? maybe you could just use the same cloth for the other aluminum pads?

Yes, but theyre not very similar; much more friction than I like. There's the Razer Scarab (good, not great) and Ironclad (plain bad--and very pricey :/ ), for the record.

Roccat has a pretty good aluminum pad, but my g9x experiences "dead zones", ostensibly due to the frivolous graphics. Saitek just came out with a smaller aluminum pad which has an almost identical glide, and I'm considering switching to that. Still, it's too slippery and lacks the smooth yet somehow steady glide of the SX.

I think what makes the SX special is the coating and micro-texturing (extremely subtle--"brushed"), which nobody seems able to emulate.

wow seems like you've tried a few aluminum mats to replace the sx.

All of them, I believe, once the Zalman comes. I'm a semi-professional gamer, so it's part of an overarching obsession.

But yeah... loved that pad. And return policies ;)

Heh, guilty. Frankly though, I get asked what I use a lot so I've probably sold more pads than I've bought xD

By the way, I think I posted in the wrong forum. Would a mod mind moving this to the Input Devices subforum, please?

Might you be willing to part with it? $100 + your choice of a premium pad...

I have an SX, it's a pretty great pad alright.

One thing is that some optical mice are meant to have problems with it.

I picked up my SX when it was still in stock off ebay for 30$, it came in original box, everything, i've always knew something was special about this thing.
I probably will use it as my main mousepad forever.
10 months with this, zero scratches, abrasions, chips, nicks, or anything.
I CHERISH THIS!
