Monoprice gaming mouse - $20 - anyone tried it?
« on: Sun, 21 October 2012, 14:36:25 »
So I am looking for a new mouse, and even though I spend probably <20% of my time on a PC playing games, only gaming mice seem to have a decent weight that feels comfortable. Every mouse I buy, I end up being dissapointed because of how light and / or small they are. I am no using a wireless Logitech that I planned on using just with my laptop, but it is actually heavier than the wired one I had (don't recall the model, I sold it to a friend a while ago) because of the batteries in it. It has the right weight, just over 100 grams with 2x 18gram batteries in it, but it is too small to use regularly and most comfortably.

I recently found out that Monoprice has a gaming mouse for only $20 - http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10850&cs_id=1080907&p_id=9258&seq=1&format=2 - , and it comes with 5 x 4 gram weights you can put inside of it. That is only 20 grams, but I am hoping the rest of it is at least 75+ grams to get it to an optimal weight. It also has all the other typical gaming mouse features, that I really don't care too much about. Overall, what I am most worried about is build quality and firmware to be able to customize it (I have a mac, and that has been a problem with many non-Logitech mice I have used before).

To get to the point, anyone tried this mouse out? It could definitely be a great buy, depending on the manufacturer though. I'll probably try it out when I make on order from Monoprice in a week or two, but I'd like to try and get some info before I pull the trigger.

EDIT: forgot the link, http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10850&cs_id=1080907&p_id=9258&seq=1&format=2, put it in above too

What is your budget for a mouse?

I'd be worried about build quality. The Xornet is about the same price, I'd go for that if you want a cheap quality mouse. Not tried one so I don't know about weight, but I'd imagine it feels a bit light and flimsy like most cheap mice.
The SteelSeries Kinzu might be a bit small, slightly more expensive as well, but it feels very solid and heavy for such a cheap mouse.

I might be something of a snob, but if I saw that Monoprice mouse in a store I would probably just ignore it right away.
Then again, I'm a snob and could be horribly wrong on this; it could be the perfect mouse for you, and at that price I'd say it's well worth a shot if you don't want to spend a lot.

Don't really have one necessarily, but if I could save some money for similar quality, I would like to. I'm already addicted to keyboards though, so I don't mind spending a decent amount of money if the quality is there. So far I've been disappointed with the cost vs. benefit of mice I have tried though.

G400 baby.  Marginally more expensive and probably vastly superior.

Looks like you can pick up a factory refurbished g500 for ~$37 shipped http://www.ebay.com/itm/390448760718?hlp=false . They've got a 14 day return policy, too. It's an excellent mouse.
