Looking for a backlit board
« on: Wed, 17 October 2012, 20:37:19 »
A friend of mine got a Razer Black Widow Ultimate a while back (yes I know you all hate them, but he's never had any problems) and I fell in love with the feel of blues. I've never owned a mechanical keyboard before, so I'm completely new to the market and have no idea what I'm doing. Given the bad things I've read about Razer keyboards here I'm going to try to avoid them. I'm currently using a Logitech G110 and I love the backlighting and media controls. Can someone suggest a few boards I can look at (preferably with blue, clear, or brown switches) that have backlighting and media control similar to the G110? Thanks!

A Ducky Shine II has backlighting.  To get media controls like that, you have to get one of those gaudy gaming keyboards.

You can also get a Cooler Master Trigger.

And also, about the back-lighting, I hope you understand that unlike membrane keyboards, you can't actually put an advanced LED mechanism underneath mechanical keyboards, as happens on membrane ones:

Membrane keyboards have enough space for something like that, since the light shines through the plastic and membrane, and that is something mechanical keyboards just can't do, since obviously nothing will shine through the plate...

Mechanical keyboard LEDs are like this:

Actually, come to think of it, you might be able to pull off some "advanced backlighting" with the new Matias switch (because of the transparent housing) and an acrylic plate...not that this has been done yet, but it ought to be possible.

As for the OP's request, I don't know enough about it to be wholly comfortable recommending it, but the Logitech g710+ is a backlit mechanical keyboard with media keys.

Yeah, but someone else besides me, hated the idea of paying a premium price for a keyboard with an acrylic plate?

*shrug* I'm sure. Plenty of people don't like backlighting at all, for that matter, because of the extra failure points represented by LEDs and the fact that backlighting usually means coated-and-etched keys (eww). But there are probably also people who would buy something with super-pretty color-shifting backlights, just for the look of it.
