Doubleshots with translucent legend
« on: Sun, 11 November 2012, 10:33:00 »
Hello Geekhack :)

Where would I be able to find a set of doubleshot keycaps with a translucent legend to allow a backlight to pass through nicely? Perhaps the white on black set from SP?

Also, is it at all likely that there are similar doubleshots with the Korean hangul characters on them?

Thanks :)

PS: is there any sorry odd minimum post count or something before I'm able to buy and trade here?

Yes there is a post limit to go to the marketplace.

No one has produced doubleshots for back lighting because the different plastics dont play nice together. I believe it is something like shrink-rates during cooling affecting the final quality. & I guess SP hasnt seen enough interest to pursue further...

So... I believe ALL keycaps designed for backlighting are either painted then the legend lasered, or something similar involving some kind of coating.

Just say NO to ABS keycaps

Only thing I know is if you get Deck keyboards, they come with stock translucent doubleshot from what I believe.  Or wait for their doubleshot PBT which will be released around new year according to rumour  :)

SP has long stated that they will not put DS caps with clear legends into production.  They have their reasons and consistency is one of them.

Deck is not really doubleshot, not in the same sense as any other DS keycap.  The skirt is one piece of plastic and the legend/touch surface and stem are another.  The legend is negative dyesub'd onto this piece.

There is a thread with pics of supposedly real PBT DS backlit caps, and there is another thread with someone claiming that this is what Deck is going to come out with soon.  Would love for this, but I'll believe it when I have them in my hands.

Thanks :)

Does Deck or anyone else sell their keycap sets without the keyboard? Also, how well does the backlight shine around the edges of a solid black key? Do SP's doubleshots keyset of white on black allow any light to go through the white?

Qwerkeys recently released somewhat of an inverse keycap but not doubleshot.  They have a translucent keycap with laser infilled legends

Interesting idea, might try something like that on the WASD cluster. Do you know where I would be able to find a set of black backlight compatible Korean keycaps? With the usual method of backlight printing :)

I believe Ducky has posted on their Facebook page about starting to implement double shot back lit keys for their caps lock scroll lock, function etc keys on one of their new boards. Perhaps they might expand on this and offer full sets in the future?

I've been waiting for Ducky to release their new range of keys for a while.. they seem to bring out more and more keyboards and no new keys.
