Greetings Geekhack!
« on: Sat, 08 December 2012, 05:05:56 »
I've been recently introduced to mechanical keyboards, and Manyak's Mechanical Keyboard Guide on OCN really piqued my interest. I've used OEM keyboards for my whole life, so I have yet to experience typing or gaming on a mechanical keyboard. I don't own one yet, but I plan to do so in the imminent future. I'm considering getting a Filco Majestouch 2, but am still looking around for reviews and considering other mechanical keyboards. I really wanted to acquire the upcoming WASD Keyboard V2. However, since I live in Australia, I found the $55ish shipping costs rather prohibitive.

Not sure what else to say really, so I'll end the post here.

Welcome to Geekhack!

A Filco would be a very good, solid first choice, albeit a little more expensive than some boards, perhaps.

But, as you are in Australia, PCCG has the largest range of mechanical keyboards.  CPL has a few.  Even CentreCom, if you can tolerate their service, has some.

If you don't need a numeric keypad, and can get hold of a CoolerMaster Quickfire Rapid, that is up there with the Filco in quality, but about half the price.  Everyone that has a QFR reckons it is great!  Mine is :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks Rowdy! I'll look into it  :). Would you happen to know when the best time/s to buy are? For instance, do these get reduced over the Christmas period?

Nah, sorry mate, I've only recently got back into mechanical keyboards, so I have no idea if/when they go on special.

Just do what I do and bookmark the product pages and check them every few days.
